Social media can be powerful as students love spending time on social media. However, we need to balance the use in classroom delicately as some students may not have internet accese and may be left behind. We may also have to grapple with social media addiction and etiquette. One way is to tap into school wifi for students and allocate time within lessons for this kind of activity using school ipads to take a picture and caption and post it to their class page as a form of exit ticket.

Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, interestingly can also be a teaching tool. Students nowadays are very IT-savvy, even for primary school students with SEN. I guess this helps them to be better engaged and enjoy learning. As an educator, before we embark on such platforms for T&L, we must ensure that students have some kind of understanding for cyberwellness, so that it will not be misused.

While it is a good avenue for teaching and learning & communication with our students, having a good understanding on the guidelines for educators on using social media will help us use them confidently but safely.

I think the greatest concern would be setting up clear guidelines and limitations when using these sites, as the responsibility remains with the educator for contents to remain appropriate for all audiences.

I could explore using social media to broadcast lessons especially for pull-out sessions and/or use them as platforms for discussion.

After today's lesson, I realised that social media could be used to facilitate the learning of the students and not just engaging with them or building rapport with them. However, not every student may be suitable in this approach to teaching. I will need to consider the maturity and readiness of the students. Definitely, I will still have to set guidelines and reminders on how to use social media for lesson appropriately. It would be interesting to try it out and hear the feedback of the students.
