Other parts of my identity hold the same power but I choose not to let them. I've always grown up with my dad calling me "prieta," a derogatory term for brown people so my ethnicity is not something I can hide. It runs through not only my skin but deeper in my veins. While I am proud to be Latinx, I cannot trust that I will always be safe within my community due to my sexuality and gender. A community where mothers wake up before dawn and head to work leaving their children to walk to school alone. For as long as I could remember, I was one of these children. Heteronormativity tries to enforce the roles of the father being the breadwinner of the family but in a community with single mothers and families of low income, this is not a choice. These mothers, however, are still victims of heteronormativity. Whether it is waking up early to make their husbands' lunches or coming home after a long day of work to cook dinner for her children.
