As a non-binary femme who has a female identifying partner, my sexuality can be seen as an aspect of my identity that can be used to oppress me because it goes directly against heteronormativity. Other parts of my identity hold the same power but I choose not to let them. Although the fact that they are all connected makes them powerful, I take pride in each of the things that can contradict my identities.

Being brown in itself can be oppressive. I've always grown up with my dad calling me "prieta," a derogatory term for brown people so my ethnicity is not something I can hide. It runs through not only my skin but deeper in my veins. While I am proud to be Latinx, I cannot trust that I will always be safe within my community due to my sexuality and gender. Heteronormativity is strongly embraced in the Latinx culture, where women are meant to get married, have children, and tend to their husbands; but, in my current relationship, where does this leave me and my future?

Not only because of my culture am I expected to be a mother and a wife to a loving husband, but also due to my sex assigned at birth. Because of heteronormativity, a woman's purpose is to reproduce and this factor measures if she has been successful in life, but what about women's other accomplishments? We continue to fight for our rights in a society that engrains in us that women need men for protection because, as women, we are and should always be submissive to men.

A beacon of hope I hold for feminism is La Virgen de Guadalupe. She, as a woman, is seen as independent and takes the role of a man in the sense that She looks over us and and protects us. However, this still feeds into heteronormativity because She is seen as the Mother of Mexico because she holds matriarchal values in the way she looks over her children.

Growing up, regardless of where I moved, I always found a familiar community in my neighboring Latinxs. A community where mothers wake up before dawn and head to work leaving their children to walk to school alone. For as long as I could remember, I was one of these children. Heteronormativity tries to enforce the roles of the father being the breadwinner of the family but in a community with single mothers and families of low income, this is not a choice. These mothers, however, are still victims of heteronormativity. Whether it is waking up early to make their husbands' lunches or coming home after a long day of work to cook dinner for her children. As women, we are expected to be mother and wife first but it is time we are our own identities first; whether they be sexuality, ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, or social class, we deserve to put ourselves first.
