Puritans believed that the devil was shown in people who were lazy. Many puritans wanted more purification so they broke away from the church. Some came to america in 1620. Then the great migration of puritans began in 1630. The puritans are a VERY hardcore religious group. They lived an agricultural lifestyle in new england with mostly every family farming.

Family: Surprisingly the puritans lived longer then most, most grew to be grandparents which was uncommon of the time.
Lifestyle: Agricultural farm life.
Male/female roles: Females were not aloud to vote and mostly stayed at home. Men voted and did the labour work outside of them home.
Punishment: If someone did not follow the church they were shamed. That was the biggest thing to the puritans you can not disrespect the lord.

The A on hester's clothing symbolizes adultery in its entirety. The A gets branded on all of her clothing as a symbol to the community that she is diffrent and did not conform like everyone else. This is probably the strongest peice of symbolism in the entire book because it plays such a defining role. It really shows to the readers how judgy and rude the community is, along with how they cast the daughter and hester out for her mother's sin.
