The photo's machine is the imposing stone of The Liberator newspaper. The liberator was the most significant and longest running anti slavery paper. It was published near Beacon hill, where the museum is located.(seokyeon)

Looking at this, we can see that he put a lot of effort into the freedom of the black people. It was impressive that William Lloyd Garrison continued his will despite the social image at the time in favor of slavery. We thought that his efforts had a great influence on the abolition of slavery.(jun)

Lesley & Jaesung Kang

(Lesley)

This picture shows the brutality of life on a slave ship. From 16th to 19th century, Europeans began the trans-Atlantic slave trade. As you can see in this picture, they made shelves to keep the slaves in lower deck. These shelves were so small that they could not even sit on their long journey to the Americas. They were tortured and maltreated that large percentage of the crew died during journey in the ship.

I think this painting shows at a glance that people who supported slavery didn't even think their slaves as human beings. We have to remember this history, and contemplate whether we are doing same things nowadays implicitly. We have to look back ourselves.

I thought that the slaves weren't able to express their SOS because they did not have knowledge to do. They were treated as animals or livestocks, not as humans. It just came to me that Douglas's word, 'knowledge is the pathway from slavery to freedom'.

Kokona and Yuzu

We choose Anna E. Dickinson for this assignment. When she was a teenager, she became one of the campaign’s most popular speakers after gaining notoriety for her critique of slavery. Dickinson also spoke at Emancipation Day in Boston, where it was noted that she referred to the Civil War and described it as a “contest can have but one ending; no compromise, no conciliation.”

I used to think that the historical figures whe fought to end slavery were incredibly brave and far beyond my reach. However, according to the museum exhibits, a woman named Anna made a name for herself by speaking out against slavery when she was about the same age as me.

Sujin & Saki

This picture represents the impact of covid on POC community. During the covid pandemic, people in POC community got a huge impact of covid, because they had limited access healthcare system. I also experienced the covid pandemic. So, i know how much covid is pain and sad things for us. Poc community’s people are discriminated by white people because of just skin color. And as a result, they got sick, or died even when there is medical system that can treat them. When i learned about this situation, i felt it‘s unfair and we need to accept all of people is treated equally even if they got different race, color, personality.

I strongly believe that there should be no discrimination against these people. This is because these discriminations are about someone's life and people should not be discriminated based on skin color or prejudice. We all need to be equal, and we need to know and understand each other deeply. I thought it was optimal that this material catches many people's eye and made known to them. I also felt that it is necessary to tell the story so that people will not forget that this happened.

Miharu & Honoka

We choose this picture. It is one of the most powerful images of the early anti-slavery movement. Inside the ship, nearly 300 enslaved Africans with rows upon rows for transport to America. At the bottom and right side, it shows the divisions into the 'Men's room,' 'Boys' room,' 'Women's room,' and '

Girls' room.'

I felt this painting showed that humans are the most evil creatures on earth. Also, I thought that people were not being treated like people and they could run away, but I didn't think they knew how. Frederick Doglass said that learning leads to freedom, and I felt this painting perfectly showed that.

Lesley & Jaesung Kang

(Jaesung)

This picture shows how slaves were transported to the US on ships. They were crammed together as if they were not human and had to stay like that for over a month until they reached America. All while being chained together and with little to no food or water.

In fact, conditions were so horrible that around 15% did not survive the journey. Some slave owners would even throw sick but still-living captives overboard just for insurance claims.

We need to acknowledge the horrible things that we did to black people back then and that America was built upon the sufferings and innocent lives of black people.
