How would you define "abnormal" personality disorder?

Abnormal personality development occurs when development is outside of the realm of normal. Personality development deals with "the way of thinking, feeling, and behaving that makes a person different from other people" (Skodol). Within personality comes someone's genetics, life experiences, and cognition. No one person is the same, like their fingerprints, but an abnormal personality is when it affects what is listed above in the image provided. The DSM5TR currently has ten specific types of personality disorders. Diagnosis of a personality disorder can only be diagnosed at age 18 or older because younger people are still developing their personalities.

Skodol, A.

Well...Both!

We are born with genetic makeup that makes us who we are. However, life events shape the way we react to events, cope with trauma, etc,. In the research article linked above, researchers found that the identical genetic makeup in twins attributes to some personality similarities. However, researchers saw that most of the personality development in their subjects developed due to environmental factors and the way their parents raised them.

The researchers found that the oldest siblings had a higher self report of intelligence and a slightly higher intelligence score based off their tests. However, researchers found little correlation between personality traits and birth order.
