NOW:
Passive surveillance: By law, if FMD is suspected, it has to be reported to veterinary authorities immediately. Veterinary authorities must then inspect the animals and, when needed, collect samples.

DURIGN AN OUTBREAK: 
When FMD is suspected, veterinary authorities must collect samples for FMD diagnosis on the affected farm. If it is suspected that FMD has entered the farm from another farm, or has spread to other farms, those farms must be inspected and samples must be collected. When FMD has been confirmed at a farm/farms, restriction zones are established around the farm/farms: protection zone with 3 km radius and surveillance zone with 10 km radius.

ONCE CASES HAVE NOT BEEN DETECTED FOR 2 WEEKS:
On the farm with confirmed infection, adequate cleaning and disinfection procedures must be performed. All hoofed animals at all farms on the restriction zones must be clinically inspected, and samples are collected for serological tests: >15 days and >30 after cleaning in the original farm days in farms of protection zone and the surveillance zone, respectively.
After this, passive surveillance continues.
