FACTUAL: The term "babaylan" refers to the pre-colonial Philippine tradition of women who were mystic healers and possessed a strong spiritual connection that gave them access to political and social power. In tribal communities, Babaylan women act as bridges between the spiritual and physical worlds. They play a variety of leadership roles, including warrior, healer, priestess, and sage. Babaylans have a keen knowledge of how all life is interconnected, and they take the community's needs into account when making decisions. Many Bayalans are still politically active today, advocating for justice in their communities and taking on issues including land disputes, evictions, state violence, escalating militarization, and land theft.

Reference: https://filipinawomensnetwork.org/epahayagan/did-you-know-pre-colonial-philippines-longstanding-tradition-of-women-leadership-and-mysticism

CONVENTIONAL: This work is essentially a representation of the abounding richness of life, with people represented in connection with Nature and two Roman girls hunting with their hunting hounds and flocks of doves symbolizing the divine. Las Damas Romanas is the conclusion of the artist's observations of classical Roman buildings and artifacts, which he studied and sketched as studies.

Reference:
https://sizeofart.com/dose-of-art-89-juan-luna-las-damas-romanas-1882/

CONVENTIONAL: The Tagalog word for grain, "palay," represents the most important crop in the Philippines. Amorsolo's desire for beauty is reflected in the word "maiden." Amorsolo depicted ladies in his works that did not adhere to the Western ideal of beauty; instead, he gave them rounded faces rather than the oval ones that are frequently seen in newspaper and magazine pictures. The eyes should be incredibly active, not the kind that are dreamy or sleepy like those of a Mongolian. The nose should have a hard, firmly defined, blunt shape. Therefore, the ideal Filipina beauty should not necessarily have a white complexion or the dark brown color of the typical Malayan. Instead, she should have clear skin or fresh-looking coloring, which we frequently see when we meet a Filipina.

Reference: https://www.google.com/amp/s/ationgson.tumblr.com/post/81401515132/palay-maiden-1920-oil-on-canvas-palay-is-tagalog/amp

FACTUAL: Many of the women suffered those traumatic days for anywhere between a month and a year. Many of the women taken captive by the Japanese and removed from their homes against their will were widows, but some of them were married. One Filipina and her husband were taken into custody. While she underwent the abuse from the Japanese military personnel, her husband was imprisoned at Fort Santiago, shackled to a wall, and beaten to death. Those who resisted were severely beaten. One woman even had her face burned by a cigarette, making her afraid of mirrors because they would bring back the memories of those dreadful nights. These women admitted that they were afraid of the night because it brought back memories of the things that were done to them against their will. Imagine what it took for them to even forget what happened.

Reference:
https://indiohistorian.tumblr.com/post/171654045506/a-monument-to-the-forgotten-filipina-when-you/amp

FACTUAL: Manansala illustrates two nearly identical female merchants sitting beside their wares in Fish Vendors. In addition to his technical advancement, Manansala's subject matter tapped into a fresh perception of urban dwellers. Manansala highlighted the underappreciated facets of life in Manila by drawing topics from his immediate environment, including cockfighting, family gatherings, and regional cuisine. Manansala emphasizes a peaceful period in the day of two fish merchants in the current piece; neither character interacts with the audience directly, evoking a sense of closeness. His outfit choice furthers the relationship between the two ladies and communicates concepts of solidarity and labor within a market.

Reference:
https://www.sothebys.com/en/auctions/ecatalogue/2016/modern-contemporary-southeast-asian-art-hk0657/lot.310.html

The pre-colonial era of Philippine history is regarded as the longest in the country's history. The work from this time is based in culture, tradition and covers daily tasks. Like what the painting depicts about their traditions regarding medical treatment of mystic healer during the pre-colonial period. The pre-colonial Filipino literature and Spanish culture initially clashed, as seen in the works of this cultural era. But because the invaders stayed so long, the Spanish culture gradually permeated the literature of the time in the Philippines. Early Filipino artists were greatly affected by religion, which evolved into a significant theme. In the American Period, Fernando Amorsolo became well-known for his artwork depicting Filipino life at the time. In Japanese Period, the painting here created by Diosdado Lorenzo. It demonstrates how Japanese soldiers abuse Filipinos, particularly women, by raping and torturing them. Lastly the Contemporary art is often about ideas and concerns, rather than solely the aesthetic.

The art gives us information about what occurred and the circumstances in the particular age when that paint was created in addition to showing us a beautiful production by great painters. That's how art really important, because it shows until now the culture, tradition and circumstances before.
