- because he was known as a good preacher, it was his responsibility to make people face their secret sins. Due to his good reputation, he takes it up on himself to make the parishioners acknowledge their own sins. This shows how much of an amazing preacher he is.

They claim that is the ministers struggles lead to other people going to salvation.

He used his own confessions of sins to make other people feel better.

He lived his life open about his sin. Preached that you can sin but still be faithful to your faith.

-Hooper's guilt is very strong and his argument with his potential wife, Elizabeth, shows that he is willing to commit only to facing his sins.

-Elizabeth and the other parishioners could see through his sin. He could have had a mistress, which was assumed after the young woman's funeral.

Hooper says he will keep on his veil until everyone else puts it on. Further proving that he did this as an example and to prove a point.

Hooper's sin would be committing adultery when engaged to another lady. He would use his veil to quietly atoning and repent for his sins without verbally saying so.
