Nikolai Kondratiev was a Russian economist.
He noticed a pattern in how innovation and technology influenced economic growth and eventual decline. These were manifest as economic cycles of 50 years. The cycle or wave would start with a major innovation within a certain industry, incline to a peak and then decline to the point of recession, once a new innovation is introduced the cycle would begin again.

Kondratiev died in 1938 but his wave theory remained relevant after his death. There, according to the theory, has been 5 definite cycles and, according to many economists we are currently living within the start of a 6th wave.

Each wave will contains a spring, summer, autumn and eventual winter.

The ‘spring’ would be the start of the wave: A innovation to prompt economic growth.

The Summer phase: Business is booming, investment Into said innovation.

Autumn see the wave flatten out and reach its peak. Consumer debt reaches usustainable levels..its all downhill from here.

Winter brings unemployment and recession.

And everyone waits for the next big innovation.

As the graph above shows the theory has been applied to 5 big innovations. If the theory is to be believed we re are within the spring or initial period of the 6th wave.

Steven Anguilar-Millan is director of research at The European Futures Observatory, a UK based foresight institute, The institute's areas of specialisation are financial futures, geopolitical futures, and the future of the global economy.

In the paper ’Surfing the Sixth Wave, written for World Futures Review in 2012 ( a SAGE published academic journal) Millan anticipated that this 6th technological long wave would fully take off within 2020.

Expanding on the ’seasons’ related phases, Millan depicts a more detailed set of phases and sub phases that make up a wave.

Millan, at time of writing in 2012, stated that we were currently in the Maturity phase of the 5th wave. Millan talks of volume overtaking innovation. The consequence of this will be a scarcity in resources. This will be the impetus of the sixth wave of innovation.

The technology driving the sixth wave was described as a mixture of Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Information Technology, and Cognition Technology

In simple terms the 'Internet Of Things' refers to everything thats connected to the internet. Today we can also use this term to describe the growth of physical objects that can gather data and connect to each other. From smart watches to gas meters, this mass gathering of data can be seen as an oppurtunity for companies, governments and public authorities to deliver a more and more efficient service.
This technology is also being used in the health sector. It has been estimated that over 592 million people could be affected by Diabetes by 2035. Big tech companies are now looking to expand into health care.

Kondratiev Waves are the changes to the economy based on innovative changes, during a decline in the economy innovation helps change the world in a manner that the economy gets better upon the use of new technology and higher stock market value of said technology, even though this will cause a rise in the economy there will eventually be another dip in the wave (economy) and there will be more changes to the world with new viewpoints on how innovation can better the falling economy. this cycle repeats and is called Kondratiev Waves.

THE SAMPLER
The sampler in whatever form its taken over the past 50 or so years has enabled us to take sound and remake, remodel, reshape it into something new. There is a case that great art doesn't come from nowhere. Artists borrow from each other and from the past. The trick is to take that and to make it our own, to put our own personality into it. The sampler, as a piece of hardware or software has given birth to modern music. Probably a form of music that has had the biggest impact on culture in the 20th century was Rap/hip hop and without either the principal idea of sampling, or taking sections of records where there would only be a drum beat and repeating these parts over and over so as an MC could rhyme over them, then this music could not exist. things would be VERY different today.

I think the creative innovation that contributed most was digital technology like the digital camera.

the innovation of the digital camera has made film production much easier as you can instantly watch back the shot you've just filmed to see if you need to reshoot it whereas before, when cameras with film stock were used, it was not as easy to review the footage and most of the time a film projector would of been the best way to watch and review the footage.

the innovation of the digital camera means that films and tv shows can be made quicker than previously therefore cutting down production time and ultimately production cost too which provides you with hopefully a bigger profit from the film.

The Kondratieff Wave is a theory that was produced by a sociologist economist - Nikolai D. Kondratieff. It states that technological advancements have a major effect on economics around the world. The wave has troughs and peaks, trough is when the world economy has plummeted, such as the Great Depression. Therefore the peaks are when the world’s economy has thrived such as 1850 - 1900, when steel was mass produced for the railway industry.

I would say that sharing our own creations with others is one of the easiest ways to help inspire their creativity. For me, seeing certain styles of art for example will make me want to try those kinds of media and technique, especially if I've never tried them before. Sometimes it even just helps to give people creative prompts; If you tell them to do something initially, it might spiral into something big and innovative for them personally as they use what you have told them to do to create something more personal for themselves.

Kondratiev Wave theory was a concept introduced during the Russian Communist era. Introduced by Nikolai Kondratiev it focused on the economy being driven by a series of cycles that were influenced by innovation and evolution. Kondratiev highlighted this through a wave diagram depicting the highs and lows of society's economic growth/ decline. The waves have been estimated to last for 40-60 years and there have been 5 wave cycles since the 18th century. Examples of highs or peaks on the wave diagram can be seen during the invention of the steam engine, steel and the automobile and the troughs can be seen during the great depression and the financial crisis of 2007.

How innovations change the world The cameraThe camera was developed by a number of people over the course of history but in 1816 the first ever successful photograph was taken by Nicéphore Niépce in 1816. the original design of the camera dates back to 1685 when a German author Johann Zahn wrote the book ‘Oculus Artificialis teledioptricus sive Telescopium’ and the book basically demonstrated how light can be used to project an image. The camera had been created and developed by a number of people over the course of history but in 1816 the first ever successful photograph was taken by Nicéphore Niépce in 1816. I believe that the camera has changed the world so much and my reason for this is that since the 19th century we have been able to see and imagine of what the world was like before our time , we have been able to track down pictures of our ancestors looked like , document an entire existence of a person , able to see a loved ones face when they are no longer here , capture some of the best times of your life in a still image and these are just a few examples of why I think the camera has changed the world in a massive way . A huge majority of the human population owns a camera whether it’s a professional camera , phone camera or a polaroid us as individuals are now able to capture our whole existence thru still and moving images and I think this is a pretty cool thing to be able to do when we don’t really know what our ancestors and the world we now know looked like 200 years ago where as now we are able to discover what our entire world looks like because the camera gives people the ability to photograph everywhere around the world and uploads those images to google , social media and wherever else they want to for the anyone in the world to see . The camera in my opinion the camera is one of the biggest innovations that has changed the world.

Kondratiev Waves describe economic cycles shown throughout history displaying how society depends on certain industries to stay sustainable. For example, from 1780 to 1830, the development of the steam engine and growth of textile industry allowed society to progress whilst staying economically sustainable. Currently, we are potentially entering a 6th wave, as the previous wave (5th) began with the increase in dependency of information communication technology. It is theorised that the new wave we are entering may be related to healthcare due to such issues as the current Corona Virus

With the increase in development of artificial intelligence, we can create a more automatic flow to life. Society 5 describes how life as we know it will result in heavy use AI. The cyber industry, resulting from the 4th industrial revolution , will open the path for this new way of life. Currently we can control our houses with smart technology, yet only 10 years ago we could just about make a simple Google search with our voice. The innovations into smart technology will result in the hours spent with repetitive tasks such as cleaning to reduce drastically, giving us more hours of the day to focus on other essentials such as work and leisure

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Kondratieff Wave - also known as super-cycles, K-waves, surges, and long waves - refers to cycles, lasting about 40 to 60 years, experienced by capitalist economies.
A Kondratieff Wave is a long-term economic cycle, indicated by periods of evolution and self-correction, brought about by technological innovation that results in a long period of prosperity.
Kondratieff Waves, a theory rejected in Kondratieff's home country, are relegated to a branch of economics called "heterodox economics," meaning that it does not conform to the widely accepted, orthodox theories espoused by economists.

Draw Out Creativity

All artists know how fragile the creative ego can be, and how easy it is to talk yourself out of making work. It is hard to put something out there in the world. It is the artist’s appreciation of this – of the sheer leap of faith it takes to commit pen to paper, or hand to clay, to follow a small urge to bring something into being, when the voice in your head is telling you it might not work, that I believe makes artists such great enablers. They understand how difficult this process can be, and yet they persist in trying. Contrary to the image of a desperate artist working in a studio, tearing his or her hair out in despair as they commit their tormented soul to canvas, I actually think artists are amazingly optimistic people. They continue to create despite the fact that many times it doesn’t work out. They are driven. They have a passion, and people respond to this passion.

Be supportive and nurturing to your pupils. The best teachers are passionate, supportive, critical friends, who respect the creative process.

The DuleShock4

When the duleShock4 was released in late 2013, it was a vary revolutionary controller for consumers. It had improved vibrations, so that people felt more emerged and felt what was happening; HUGELY improved motion controls; a touch bar, and so Many other changes. But as I previously stated, this is a consumer-based product, this wasn’t ‘top of the line’ or even ‘up-to-scratch’ with that perfectional needed.
Later down the PS4’s lifecycle, Razer partnered up with Sony to bring a new game changing controller. This controller is a must-have for E-sports and other gaming pro’s, this is due the customisation of the controls; the new layout, and the reduced latency from controller feedback (controller feedback is when the time it takes for the data from the controller to hit the PS4, to then hit the screen). However, this was at a price, Razer is known as a premium gaming company, that sell premium items and quite high prices. The normal DuleShock4 came to around about £49.99 - $59.00. Whereas the new Razer adaptation is £99.99 - $119.99. However, Razer had reiterated how ‘this controller is only for people who want it.’ Meaning, that if you are just playing a casual single player game, or a causal multiplayer game, then this controller might not be for you.

K-wave Theory

Nikolai D. Kondrafieff (a Russian economist) formed the concept of the Kondratieff wave theory (also known as the K-wave theory) in the early 1900’s. His theory investigates 50-year interval cycles of innovations and economic trends that involve mechanical and technological developments, that impact greatly upon society. From this theory, we can distinguish the past and current 6th innovation wave trend. These are the: first industrial revolution in 1780, second industrial revolution in 1830, steel age in 1880, automobile age in 1930, digital age in 1970 and today’s intelligent technologies. Within each innovation trend’s 50 years, there are 4 phases, which are the: spark of the new innovation, thrive and investment of the new innovation, credit accumulation with the peaky of the trend then a decrease of popularity and interest leaving a crisis with the currency. The 6th wave is an innovation that is transforming manufacturing to be more technological, more sustainable and environmentally friendly and helps contribute to societies’ psychosocial health. Overall, the k-wave theory helps society to understand the life changing trend, the stage of development within the current day and what is predicted to happen within the future.

Sources:

· http://81.47.175.201/flagship/attachments/surfing_the_sixth_wave.pdf

· https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5oTz1e5qqE&feature=youtu.be

· https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/knowledge/economics/kondratieff-wave/

· https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYF0GeQi3bU

· https://medium.com/@riddhishethdash/what-are-the-innovations-that-are-predicted-to-unlock-economic-growth-in-the-6th-wave-5f195345e1e9

Society 5.0 (alternatively known as the super-smart society) is a Japanese inspired innovation that aim to form a ‘cyber-physical system’ that combines both cyber and physical spaces together. The concept of ‘society 5.0’ originates from the Abe Cabinet in 2017 after annual meetings have been to discuss how the country (now world) could improve and revitalize the economy. Japan’s Prime minister Shinzo Abe is the first to be in office for 8 years. Abe, introduced Japan to the ‘Abenomics’ (an improvement method/plan as to how to stimulate the country’s economy) that consists of: monetary easing, fiscal stimulus and a growth strategy, alternatively known as the 3 arrows. Using the 3 arrows and previous 4 societies, the revolutionary new socio-economic intelligence lifestyle of digital technologies (comprising of artificial intelligence, data analytics, the Internet of Things’ and robotics) will be introduced. By forming this platform, people will have access to and the ability to use cyber technology to improve their daily lives with safe and -environmentally- friendly, health support products.

Sources: https://en.unesco.org/news/japan-pushing-ahead-society-50-overcome-chronic-social-challenges#:~:text=At%20the%20same%20time%2C%20Society,to%20people%20in%20depopulated%20areas.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=org7Qeq9ANQ

https://www.japan.go.jp/abenomics/about/
https://twitter.com/kaigrunwitz/status/1003591978775465984

Personally, I believe photography has been the most significant creative innovation to set design that has contributed for society. Photography has helped artists, especially set designers and researchers to produce inspirational art works for film, TV and theatre productions. Today, people rely on photographic images from a wide variety of sources, for example the internet, books, newspapers, photo albums and their own photos; to inform them about contemporary or historical species, objects and areas that exist/existed around the world. Without this innovation set designers would not be able to clearly visually showcase or produce a set’s conceptual appearance and atmosphere.

The Kondrateiff Theory is essentially where certain innovative changes the economical cycles and how they effect us as a society. These cycles happen over a 50 to 60 year period. The first cycle being the invention of steam and textile manufacturing, cycle 2 being steel and mass transportation, cycle 3 being science and the rise of electrical power and the chemical industry, cycle 4 being the petrochemical industry and automotive inovations, cycle 5 being that of information technology such as computers, and finally cycle 6 being about healthcare. However, the final cycle is yet to be decided on how it will effect social economics and society and the good or bad it might bring.

This theory is based of Japan's idea of wanting to bring about a cyber space and 'super smart society' through creating a healthcare that is far superior to todays and the use of technologies to help deliver goods to people by drones and autonomous vehicles. The idea is to feed analyzed data thats been analysied through AI to people through the means of cyber space, connecting all 'people, things and systems together through cyberspace'. By having society 5.0 it allows for a cheaper and healthier lifestyle while also allowing society to not feel stressed about work life due to the use of robotics and AI.

Sources: https://www8.cao.go.jp/cstp/english/society5_0/index.html

One innovative contribution to my area of study is that of electronical LED screen sets. These are relatively new to the industry however I believe that they benefit hugely. A notible user of this type of technology is the set designers of the new Disney+ series The Mandalorian. It allows the actor to move around within a space while the LED background moves with them too. This is helpful when it comes to shooting the scenes as it means you dont have to change location every shot and instead just change the LED background. Furthermore, it also means that as a set designer you dont have to spend large amounts of time building sets out of wood and other materials etc. One downside to this form of set staging however is that its expensive to install and run as essentially its a gigantic TV screen.

The theory labeled “The Kondratiev Wave” is a theory first introduced during the Russian Communist era in 1917 – 1924. It’s a theory that suggests an economic cycle born from technological innovation. This means that during every technological advancement, the economic cycle of certain things would go up and down. It was also believed that the economic cycles involved periods of self-correction meaning that during the financial crisis, when the economic cycles dipped, because of war, or something else, during this time we’d see slow growth and self-correction until the economy dipped again, and so on.

What is Society 5.0? It’s "a human-centered society that balances economic advancement with the resolution of social problems by a system that highly integrates virtual and real space". Essentially, Society 5.0 is the fourth industrial revolution, but far superior. Though the advancement in technology will skyrocket during this time, it will make the world more droned than it already is. It will make people lazier, and damage more childhoods. Children don’t need technology; they need a loving family. They need fun, they need memories. Humanity does not need technology. Humanity needs emotion, humanity needs memory. Technology is what makes humanity sloppy.

I have decided to go this direction because mental health is a very sensitive subject and is something that is widely talked about, but not nearly enough is being done about it. I personally believe that with enough push, pressure and dedication on this subject, I may be able to create something that is strongly professional and help share the mental health awareness.

A lot of the things I've seen on the topic are quite commercial and surreal and futuristic. With concepts like recording the electrical signals from your wrist and playing them back to simulate muscle memory. These concepts are both fascinating and scary for the general human but my guess is we are well on our way to society 5.0

The industrial revolution and the age of Digital are prime example of our lives being revolutionised and a resultant rise in jobs and inflation. This theory also seems to pbenifit the sustainability of a capitalist systems.

The Kondratieff Wave is a concept discovered by Nikolai D. Kondratieff which recognise economical cycles he believed to stem from technological innovation and time. Economist's say that these waves can last between 40-60 years which show highs and lows, in a pattern, of growth rates.
The discovered cycles are:
The first cycle: 1780-1830 which was based off the innovation of the steam engine and the increase of textile manufacturing

Second Cycle 1830-1880: this was created by the steel industry increasing rail transport and the economic growth that came along with it.

Third Cycle 1880-1930: Triggered with the use of electrical power.

Fourth cycle 1930-1970: triggered by the growth of petrochemical industry which supports the auto market. a recession caused by the increased price of crude oil ended this cycle.

Fifth cycle 1970's: caused by computer based information technology and it being the main cause of economic growth. Said to have ended roughly around the start of the 21st century.

Sixth cycle 2005 onwards: economist's believe the sixth cycle began in 2005 and that it is going to be fuelled by the advances in healthcare and the economic growth it is expected to achieve.

Online learning is very mundane so It's really taken it out of creative students to be stuck behind a computer.

Online learning will be a lot safer for students but it also increases mental health problems and they don't get the full support they need... Especially in a creative environment.

This change can do more good than bad. As less students will catch COVID-19 but arguably more students will leave their course less qualified than they would be if they attended practical sessions.

With belief we are in the 6th waves as of around 2005. The 1st wave is invention of the steam engine and the growth of textile manufacturing. the 2nd being mass transport with the increase of railroad support. 3rd with the rise of electrical power. 4th with the growth of the petrochemical industry creating the automobiles and individual mobility. 5th with the rise of computer based information. And the 6th being right now in the advancements in healthcare.
