Next on the agenda was the creation of a new display for holiday books. As I curated the selection, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement, imagining the joy these books would bring to eager readers during the festive season.

Toward the end of my shift, I assisted the children’s librarian in preparing for the next day’s program, Imagination Station for toddlers. This involved setting up tables and selecting maker-space items for the children to use. I appreciated that the librarian asked for my opinion on arranging the toys and play sections. It was gratifying to be involved in the creative process and contribute to the setup.

Mending Books

Today, I had the opportunity to learn about book mending under the guidance of Rebecca. The training session was comprehensive, focusing on the various aspects of repairing damaged books. Rebecca began by describing the mending process in detail and demonstrated each step.

Learning Canva

The next part of my training centered around learning Canva. Rebecca frequently uses this versatile tool to create eye-catching flyers and displays for the library. Before diving into the software, she gave me a comprehensive tour of the different departments within the Huntington Library.

Learn Spanish Program

In the second hour of my work, I participated in the "Learn Spanish" program with Ms. Sandra. She introduced me to various activities, including singing, Storytime in Spanish, games, movements, and other enriching exercises. The curriculum she uses is impressive, and I am inspired to implement a similar program at the Bridgeport Public Library to create a toddler Spanish program for the community.

The afternoon was filled with various book searches and shelving tasks. I continued to assist patrons with their inquiries and helped several families. It was a fulfilling day where I gained more insight into the operations of the Children's Department and felt more confident in my ability to provide excellent service.

In the afternoon, the children's librarian and I prepared for a program scheduled for Monday. We tested all the materials to ensure the program would be successful. I helped gather all the t-shirts and water paint needed for the program.

Tie-Dye Program

At 12 PM, the tie-dye program we prepared the day before began. The children's librarian and I went to the basement to set up. Families started arriving, and while the program was a lot of work, the children were thrilled with the final result. The tie-dye process was expedited using microwaves, so the t-shirts were ready quickly. Despite our hard work, some things didn't go as planned. We forgot to use gloves, so our hands were covered in dye, and we didn't have aprons.

Homebound Program

Today, my internship began with a training session led by Ms. Robyn, who introduced me to the homebound program she offers to patrons unable to visit the library. She explained the entire process, and I assisted her in selecting books to bring to the nursing home for these patrons. As we selected the books, Ms. Robyn explained the preferences of the homebound patrons, noting that many enjoy historical fiction, drama, and mystery. She typically reviews the last book a patron read and searches for similar titles.

Olympics Book Display

Today, I was tasked with creating a display for the Olympics. After gathering several books, I designed a flyer inviting children to borrow books and learn about the Olympics. The librarian was very pleased with the final result.

Jedi Program
