Spain ruled over Mexico for about 300 years. The colonial systems caused inequality in society, where White/European citizens enjoyed more power and privilege, while the Indigenous and Black population suffered. Miguel Hidalgo issued the Grito de Dolores on September 15, 1810 and encouraged the people to rise up against Spain in order to have their own independent nation. After more than 10 years of fighting, in 1821, Mexico was finally independent from Spain.
