The Victorian era was overall characterized by a general nostalgia for past architectural and design styles combined with machined details that came with the industrial revolution. Some of the main revived styles we see in Victorian homes are gothic styles, the modified Italian villa style (Italianate,) and the whimsical Queen Anne style. Exteriors of Victorian style homes can be classified by characteristics such as sloping mansard roofing, turrets, sweeping porches with detailed column work, and bay windows. Interiors were boldly decorated with patterned wallpapers, rugs, and furniture styles pulled from eras such as Rococo, Neoclassic, Gothic, Renaissance and more. The industrial revolution made many materials for both interior and exterior Victorian decoration much easier to obtain, which is a large reason why the style is so wide spread. More modernized versions of Victorian style are still popular today.
