Paper had pictures of different modes of transportation glued on. Each student took turns rolling a vehicle down a ramp. Which ever picture the vehicle lands on you count the number of syllables. My kids LOVED it! Kuddos to my team for creating this. They played a game, debated on syllables with each other, and concluded using cooperation and respectful words.

We had our field trip to Market Street this past week, and in the produce section they focused heavily on apples since they are in season (They have 22 different kinds of apples right now). The day before we had gone we made an anchor chart on the students favorite way to eat an apple (apple slices, whole apple, apple sauce, caramel apple, apple juice). This was to activate their prior knowledge of apples. I started the experience at stations by talking about what our experiment would be (will an apple sink or float), the materials we would be using (whole apple, sliced apples) and what it meant for something to sink or float. After I felt like they had a clear idea of the concept, they got to write their name twice on an anchor chart. They voted for if it would sink or float as a whole apple and as apple slices. After everyone had made their predictions for the experiment, we tested it during whole group. It was really fun to see their faces and learn whether their predictions were right. We then tallied the votes and made a graph out of it!

Our class is using the language that will help them succeed going forward. Their enthusiasm towards this activity has prompted us to do it at least twice a week.

We read the story "Not A Box" that morning. I brought in a bunch of old Amazon boxes that I had accumulated over a few weeks. Part of the story was having them imagine what they could make the box into. I let them do the imagining and see what they can turn their boxes into (safely!)
After we had dramatic play time at centers, each child wrote about what they did during that center. The students were engaged and sometimes looked in the book for ideas. The kids reviewed what they did at that center later on by reflecting in their journals.

We had a great discussion about facial body parts and where on our face they belonged. This activity has helped the children understand about adding details to their drawings and creations.

To study how animals and people stay warm in the winter, we filled a bowl with ice water, then had kids put their hands into gallon ziploc bags into the water, one bag insulated with cotton balls, and one bag not insulated and discovered which was warmer in the water. This helped us discuss why animals need warm fur, and people need to wear coats.

Our kids have been working all week on writing about what they want to be when they grow up. We had them tell us what type of community helper they thought they may want to be when they grew up and wrote these down. They were able to look at these and copy the words down on a piece of paper, then draw a picture of themselves as that person. We had many choose doctors, nurses, construction workers. and teachers! We then attached a photo of the child in a cap and gown and posted it on our wall. They love sharing with their parents that they first were able to write a sentence by copying it on their own and what they may want to be!
