i liked that the film was kind of over exaggerated and dramatic. It made the film interesting and you actually would want to pay attention because it sort of draws you in just because of how dramatic it was. For example, in the fight scenes the actors had crazy facial expressions and loud noise effects.

I noticed some of the costumes were very modern while some of the costumes were more old costumes. A scene that stuck out to me was when we first got to see Tybalt his costume was unexpected and I have never seen an outfit like his. One thing I disliked about the film was the nurse. I just didn't really like her costume it felt very odd.

I noticed small details in body language and tone that fueled the emotion in this movie.

The scene where Romeo shot Tybalt stuck out to me as the scene took a drastic change from the rest of the movie and transitioned into the "tragedy" that is the play. Leonardo DiCaprio played his scene with great emotion that surprised me as I did not have high expectations of this film from the start.

I noticed that the film directors often effectively chose music that paired well with the scenes. In parts like the fight scene, the background music greatly increased the intensity and presentation. One scene that most stuck out to me was the tomb scene, because it was altered so much compared to the written version of the play. Many lines were cut from it, but I think this is made up for by the way that the director portrays Romeo's death. I really liked the way that as Romeo was drinking the potion, Juliet woke up, and it was too late so Romeo had this very painful moment of realization. Something I didn't like too much about this movie was how overly dramatic some of it was. In the Tybalt-Romeo fight scene, the weather, multiple shots, and emotions were just a little bit overwhelming in my opinion.

In the 1996 version of Romeo and Juliet, I noticed that it is quite different than the 68 version. It takes place in modern times and takes a unique spin on the play and turns it into something that would be appealing for the newer generation. One scene that stuck out to me was the Tybalt and Romeo fight scene. It's over the top and very dramatic, and uses the weather, lighting and overhaul acting to convey emotion and have an impact on the story. One scene that I didn't like was the first scene with the Capulet and Montague boys. The Montague's just seem a bit over the top for the situation. I do like it a bit, though, as it characterizes the overhaul tone between the two factions. I really liked the use of music, audio and visuals to set a mood, and was quite well executed.

What you noticed

Most fight scenes in the Luhrmann Film are shorter and more intense, due to the uses of the cinematic techniques--fast camera angle changes, sound effects, and music.

What scenes stuck out to you and why

During the party scene, Luhrmann decided to have Romeo and Juliet first see each other through a fish tank in separate bathrooms. It stuck out to me because that would be the last place I would have thought that part would take place.

What you liked or disliked about the film

The film did a good job of depicting the play. For example, during the Tomb Scene, even though it was not as accurate because some characters were not included, as soon as Romeo drinks the poison, Juliet wakes up. Luhrmann creates a comedic but sad mood.

I didn't exactly like Mercutio’s acting, as it was a little too much sometimes. He is supposed to be playful and fun but the actor overshot it quite a few times. The film also showed the message failure by having the messenger boy show up in the funeral service and then run away being scared of punishment from failure to deliver. This was not a very accurate depiction as the Friar did not speak a word to the boy or yell at him for the failure.

I disliked that Lurhmann took both Friar Lawrance and Paris out of the final scene. Although this left more room for intimacy between R and J this took some of the excitement away from the final climax. It also made Romeo's death seem like a dumb accident more than it was that fact that he didn't know the full situation.
Leanardo's performance was very good. You could feel the emotion in his words. On the other hand Juliet did not have as great of a performance.
Overall the first half of this adaptation was more exciting. This was dialed back during the second half as to focus on the romance. Unfortunately some of the interest was lost with it.
