Holding students accountable for coming to class prepared can be a challenge—one that may not be “fixed” simply by using an accountability task. It may take time and a combination of strategies: ensuring strong alignment between assignments, in-class work, and course goals; being transparent about assignments and expectations; not lecturing over content students didn’t prepare; and varying your accountability tasks to maintain students’ motivation. But addressing this challenge will pay off when you see the result: dynamic in-class activities and discussions in which all your students able to engage and contribute.

In this video, Vivian Pratts breaks down the concept of Preview, View, Review. This is a technique in which a teacher takes a few minutes prior to teaching a lesson and a few minutes following the lesson to briefly discuss it with the students, activate prior knowledge and summarize key concepts for the topic to be taught or read. The majority of instructional time is still in the target language, but educators build a space for preview and review in the student’s dominant language... The view becomes the educator’s guided reading lesson in small group instruction for guided reading.

This video takes viewers through an assessment loop (i.e., pre-assess, teach, post-assess, re-teach) that can help support ELLs in language acquisition and reading comprehension. The classroom teacher employed a variety of informal assessments to determine if students were understanding the information (i.e., gestures, verbal response, written response). Another important aspect of assessment, highlighted in the video, is the collaboration between the teacher, reading specialist, and an ESOL teacher. By looking at the breakdown of questions (item analysis), these educators discussed potential language barriers (vocabulary terms) that likely contributed to students not answering the question correctly. Having a conversation with peers makes for a stronger educational team to better help struggling students.

If students are given autonomy in measuring their own learning, they will be more motivated in the learning process.
