As an educator, I want to continually strive to learn and grow and not become stuck in a rut. It is because of this goal that I decided to pursue a Master's degree in technology. It is by pursuing my Master's degree in technology that I can continue to develop as an educator. It is my hope that whatever I learn about technology today I will be able to use it in my classroom as a way to help my students to leverage technology and improve student learning. In the past, I have attended many professional development courses and workshops as a way to continually be a learner. I can’t tell you how many technology workshops I’ve gone to in the past, but because they rushed through everything I was never comfortable with using it. Currently, my use of the internet is related to working on my courses for my Master's degree. In the past, my use of the internet was related to using it to teach my students how to do research. In addition, I also used Quizlet, different PowerPoint application, as well as letting my students use different online sited such as Prezi to create online presentations.

In my opinion, educators’ spend their careers modeling the skills needed to be a leader. As a leader in education, I want to seek out new opportunities for leadership in order to support student empowerment and success. One way that I am meeting this goal is by getting my Master’s degree in technology. Another way that I can continue to meet this goal is to seek out professional learning opportunities whenever possible. As a leader, I also want to stay current with research that supports student learning outcomes and participate in learning networks whenever possible. Currently, I am testing out a new presentation platform called Padlet for my class. I can see future lesson plans that require students’ to use a presentation platform of some kind in order to present their research to the class. Because I am not currently in the classroom full time, my current use of the internet is related to doing my school work.

As an educator, I want to encourage my students to be citizens of the world by positively contributing to and responsibly participating in the digital world. As such, students and educators need to be able to make positive contributions to society and show empathy for others in the classroom and while online, especially when on social media. As a teacher, I want to create experiences for my students that allow them to make positive contributions to the classroom that encourage them to take risks and mentor their peers. In addition, in order to help students be successful outside the classroom, I want to be able to create an online digital presence that fosters and promotes digital literacy with an emphasis on helping the students to keep their personal data secure as well as maintain a safe, legal and ethical presence while using the internet with a very strong emphasis on keeping the students from violating copyright laws.

As an educator, the ability to collaborate with my colleagues has been invaluable in many aspects of my teaching career. I enjoy being able to share the resources that I have found and being able to collaborate with my fellow teachers when creating lesson plans has helped me to be able to improve my teaching practices, share my ideas, identify deficiencies, and solve academic problems before trying to teach the lesson to students. In addition, collaboration with my colleagues helps me to create authentic learning experiences for my students that use technology as the teaching medium. Being able to create lessons that allow me to collaborate and co-learn with my students is invaluable to the learning environment. When my students see that I don’t know everything and I, too, can have a “light bulb moment” really helps my students to see learning as a lifelong endeavor. At my previous school, I was able to develop my cultural competency because I had students from all over the world and being able to communicate with them depended on my being able to understand their cultural point of view.

In my previous teaching position, we used data to drive our instruction decisions in order to support students in achieving their learning goals. Given the current emphasis on high stakes testing, being able to use data to identify where students are deficient in their learning and using that to drive our instruction decisions and practices is invaluable to our ongoing effort to help our students to pass the rigorous state tests and receive a high school diploma at the end of their high school career. As a part of being data-driven, it is helpful to be able to communicate the data to students and parents with the long-term goal of students and parents taking responsibility for the students learning by engaging in their own learning achievement. I think that providing alternative ways for students to demonstrate their competency and reflect on their learning is an invaluable tool for educators. After all, there are many types of learners and each person has a preferred way of learning that best allows for him or her to showcase their learning achievements.

My name is Jodi Hunter. i am a single mother of two boys, Zane 4 1/2 and Liam 2. I have lived most of my life in Texas where I have fifteen years of experience teaching high school English. I moved my family to Oregon in 2016 so that we would be closer to family here. Since coming to Oregon, I have worked as a substitute teacher for Beaverton School District. Given all of the internet related technology being implemented by the schools in the classroom, I have decided to get my master's in informational technology in an effort to enhance my ability to teach my students and help them to be life long learners themselves. My experience with technology is limited to Microsoft Word,, plus Quizlet, Survey Monkey, and the Classroom Performance System, but I don't want my experience to stay this limited. Below is a picture of me with my boys and my mom.

In this article, the author has numerous tips for creating a book trailer that is engaging for viewers. The first tip is about picking the tool you are going to use for creating the actual book trailer. Two suggestions are Animoto and Photo Story for Windows. Another tip is where to find images that are royalty-free or have a Creative Commons license. Her first suggestion is Flickr because it has millions of images that can be used under the Creative Commons License. Her second suggestion is Wikimedia Commons which also has licenses for the images to be used by the general public. She also tells readers where to find high-quality music that maintain copyright laws. Among her suggestions are Purple-Planet Music, Incompetech Music, and Jamendo. The above suggestions are important because they help me and my students follow and maintain copyright laws while still allowing creativity and self-expression.

In addition to suggesting specific websites, the author also offers tips for creating a book trailer that will maintain audience attention. Her first tip is to not go overboard: simple is better. It is really easy to get carried away and make a trailer that is 10 minutes long, but you will lose your viewer after 3 minutes, so you need to keep the length down to 3 minutes or less. In addition, she suggests keeping your special effects to a minimum: too many will cause confusion for the audience. Plus, she suggests that you view numerous book trailers posted online so that you can see for yourself what makes a book trailer successful or not.
Now that we have all of the above tips, we are ready to begin planning our own book trailer. Because it is a book trailer, the author suggests that students take notes before even starting the trailer and find quotes that they want to make sure and use in their trailer. Once students have identified everything they want to incorporate in their book trailer, then they are probably going to have to cull some of the information in order to make the trailer succinct. Students are also going to have to decide on whether to tell their story in first or third person. If two characters are speaking in your book trailer, then use different fonts to convey their voices. The author also suggests that you limit the amount of text in your trailer and let your images tell the story. The author's final, and most important piece of advice is to "never reveal the ending of the book".
This article and the suggestions within it connect to my work as a teacher because I am always looking for new and creative ways for my students to showcase their learning, as well as their growth as a learner. In addition, having my students work in groups allows them to work on various skills, including collaborating with others, improving their social skills, and learning how to compromise and problem solve. Plus, all the school districts that I have worked for are using technology more and more, so this helps me to utilize technology in my classroom and expose my students to several important concepts, including the need to follow copyright laws and how to be able to comply with copyright laws while on the internet and when including images or music in your presentation.

This article goes over the many benefits of using digital storytelling in the Language Arts classroom. According to this article, digital storytelling can help students to visualize text. While good readers do this automatically, struggling readers usually lack this skill; thus, digital storytelling is a way to bridge this gap and help struggling readers to comprehend text and keep up with their peers. To help struggling readers, the authors created a visual think aloud that challenged students to reinvent a classroom reading strategy by turning their reading into a visual think aloud using online tools and resources. One online resource is the digital video editing systems that enables students to select pictures that represent the images that were evoked in their brain when the read a story. Once these images have been collected, the students then narrate the story on an audio track, such as iMovie, while the images displayed. Then, the students record a second audio track in which they ask questions, make observations about the text, and discuss the ideas that were generated as they read the story and created their visual think aloud.

In addition, this article claims that digital images help to bridge the gaps in writing. Digital storytelling provides an entry point for struggling writers to find their own voice within their own stories no matter what genre they choose to write in. Digital storytelling allows anyone to create their own documentary to tell their own unique story. This ability to be the center of the story could be a very powerful motivator for students to write and help them to overcome their fear of writing.

Another benefit of digital storytelling is the ability for students to visually communicate meaning. Digital images can serve as a stepping stone to make reading and writing more relevant to students. Digital editing tools allow students to read and write in the digital world. Plus, teachers can use this medium to fuse images with words and bridge any barriers students have to learning, including helping English language learners, or Special needs students to process the written word and showcase their understanding with pictures and images.

There are many positive benefits of using digital storytelling in the English language classroom. In telling their own stories, students were emboldened to use their experience and compare it to the stories of the authors that they read. This allowed students to see that their stories were unique in their own way, but also had commonalities with others; thus, they were not alone in their experiences. Pairing stories with digital images provided students with a way to get into writing that they hadn't had before which helped to motivate these struggling students. Storyboarding for this project required students to use concise language, make sure transitions were effective, and add voice to their stories, as well as to rewrite and revise their work.

I can see this project working very well in my classroom. Many of my students did not consider themselves readers, and most of my students were very reluctant to write: so anything that gets them to do both is a method worth trying. Plus, students seem to come alive when they are allowed to use technology to create their own project.

This article explores the many ways a teacher can use digital storytelling in their classroom in order to help make instruction more beneficial and more engaging to students. The first point made is that teachers need to connect theory and practice with instructional technology. In order to do this, educators must have an understanding of the effect technology has on teaching and learning within a lesson. In addition, educators must be able to communicate with students using the student's current levels of communication in order to promote student retention of the curriculum. These technology courses focused on the pedagogical aspects of technology and how they promote student learning, with a specific focus on digital storytelling and ways to use it in the classroom. As part of this course, preservice teachers were required to develop their own story that could be used in a lesson. Another benefit for teachers is the ability to use online learning tools to track student progress and make sure that each student is learning the curriculum.

Digital storytelling has implications for teachers in all content areas. Helping students to make connections between curriculum content and their lives helps students to find meaning and value from their classes. As a student's appreciation for the knowledge being presented to them goes up, their retention of the material as well as their motivation to attend to their studies goes up. Since the current generation has grown up in a digital world, it only makes sense for educators to capitalize on this and use any and all tools of technology to improve student learning.

Learning to teach with digital videos can be challenging and create other issues in the classroom. In order to use digital storytelling effectively, teachers must be able to have effective samples to view and be able to collaborate with others in order to get support and feedback. Then there are the challenges of actually getting the students to learn the tools necessary to create their own digital storyboard. While many students consider themselves computer literate, I had many students that couldn't perform the tasks necessary to create something online without massive amounts of help. So, while there are many benefits to using digital storytelling in the classroom, using it can be very time consuming, both for the teacher and for the student. Another concern that educators need to address is whether our students have the tools necessary to benefit equally from our digital presentation.

I think that using digital storytelling in the classroom is a brilliant idea that I want to incorporate into my classroom someday. I am very excited to try and use this new form of creative expression in my classroom; however, the drawbacks to using it in my classroom might be enough to get me to not use it. I would like to use it as a way for my students to showcase their knowledge of a novel we have studied by producing a product that shows deep and mindful interactions with a story.

Since the internet was introduced to the world well over 20 years ago, the amount of technology and technological devices has proliferated extensively. Initially, users were given such programs as Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, and Excel Spreadsheets. Now, users have so many choices that it can be overwhelming for them to choose one. However, all of these choices have many benefits for society, in general, and teacher's in particular. Now, both students and educators have the ability to use online tools, such as Multimedia Builder, Hyperstudio, Movie Maker, iMovie, Flickr, Jamenda, and a host of others to create their own presentations and promote their own stories. In addition, digital cameras, editing software, authoring tools, and electronic media outlets have encouraged teachers to use these things in their classroom as a way to help students construct their own meaning and ideas and to share them with their peers. Digital storytelling is just one of the ways this new technology is being utilized in the classroom. Digital storytelling is popular because it combines researching, creating, analyzing, and combining visual images with written text into one product.

For teacher's, there are several benefits of using digital storytelling in the classroom. First, it can help teachers save effort because digital storytelling encourages students to participate in class discussions which makes content more understandable for the students. Second, digital storytelling helps teachers save time by allowing them to present information in a different way in the shortest amount of time. In addition, digital storytelling promotes student collaboration because they have to work together to create one story.

On the other hand, students benefit greatly from creating their own digital story. In order to create their own story, students must research the topic, look for pictures that represent the story, plan out their storyboard, record their voice, choose a point of view, etc. The process of creating their own digital story helps students to develop their communication and problem-solving skills, provide opportunities for students to collaborate, enhance their knowledge and improve their academic skills. Plus, working together encourages students to express their opinions and learn how to resolves differences effectively. Digital storytelling's greatest benefit to students is the improvement of their higher order thinking skills because students had to research the topic, evaluate the information, and create a digital story that explains their learning. A further benefit to students is all of the technological skills they have gained from creating their digital story using the different software available online along with the tools incorporated within these software programs.

I find the information in this article helpful because it gives me numerous ways to justify the use of digital storytelling in my classroom because it provides me with evidence that I can use to convince my principal, my fellow teachers, my students and their parents that digital storytelling is relevant to college and the world, not just my classroom. Furthermore, digital storytelling teaches my students all of the skills necessary for them to be successful in the 21st Century.

So, I signed up for my free membership; however, it won't tell me anything unless I fill out my profile for my class and since I don't want to use up my free 15 days when I don't even have a class, it's hard to know if this website will live up to all of my expectations.

One thing I didn't like is the fact that I couldn't get the program to change my font color. Since it's a collage maker, I can see many opportunities for my students to use this in my class. One idea that I've had is for students to use the card function to create a mini-resume for a character. On the front, the student would use pictures of the candidate. Given that I want to teach the novel, The Color of Water, I think it is very important for my students to be able to relate to Mameh’s fear of living in Europe and I think one way that students can get a sense of what it was like to be a Jew living in Europe during the days of Hitler is to read the diary of a Jew, like Anne Frank, who actually lived and suffered from the events of the Holocaust. In addition, there are numerous other books that address the atrocities of the Holocaust in a way that students should be able to identify with and empathize with the main character. One such book is The Boy in the Striped Pajamas or My Childhood Under Fire-A Sarajevo Diary. I would pick passages from one of these books as a way to bring in the personal experiences that would help my students to be able to empathize with Mameh and hopefully to see things through her eyes.

When I originally started to think about a topic for this class, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of topics and ideas that I could choose for my English classroom. Many of my options seemed too broad, i.e. short stories, or too narrow, i.e. grammar. After much consideration, I finally decided to use a novel I already like to teach, The Color of Water, and see how I could expand or update my teaching of this novel for today’s students. Thus, throughout my time in this course, I have spent my time researching various resources, including technological, that I can use in my classroom to teach the novel, The Color of Water.

Even though reading is the basis for all learning, most of my students do not enjoy it—much to my dismay. Over my many years of teaching English, too many of my students have told me that they only read books that their teachers have made them read. When I present them with the novel, The Color of Water, most if not all of my students are overwhelmed just by how thick the book is and they haven’t even opened it yet. By teaching the novel, The Color of Water, I am able to teach a novel that is educational but also engaging for my students which allows me to dispel their belief that reading is boring or that reading doesn’t benefit them or that teacher’s only assign boring books that are beyond their comprehension.

I also found a website that has books on audio that my students can listen too. Over the years, I have found that many students need to have books read to them because they don’t have the skills needed to read the book “correctly,” i.e. their pacing of the sentences and pronunciation of the words inhibits their comprehension and audio books bridge this gap for these students.

Under the Digital Storytelling umbrella are numerous technological programs or platforms that students can use. An exciting option that I found was Book Trailers. With this option, students create a 2-3 minute video book trailer, which is much like a movie trailer. Because the video is so short, students must plan out what they are going to include and what they are going to leave out all without giving away the conclusion to the novel. A variation of the book trailer would be the movie trailer. I would like to incorporate this idea into my classroom by dividing my students up into reading groups of 3-4 people, having them read a novel, and then create a book trailer to “advertise” to the class why they should read this book. Another tool I am eager to try in my classroom is www.blogger.com, in which students use the website to blog with their peers about various topics. I would post several discussion questions within my blog and require students to respond to 3 out of the 5 questions or so in order to encourage class participation and dissemination of student ideas across the classroom. I am also eager to use the storyboard generator in my classroom because I would love to see what my students can do with it, either by recreating the story line of a novel they have read, or using the generator to create their own story. Something else I would like to try in my classroom is the Podcast. I think the kiids could do some really interesting things with this, such as using the podcast to create their own news casts about a historical event. For The Color of Water novel, I would get the students to use an event from the Civil Rights Movement, research it, and create their own Podcast report for it.

My philosophy of educational technology has always been that using it in the classroom was a great idea; however, I haven’t used it too often because I wasn’t very familiar with the programs and because of the many problems that can occur while using technology that I couldn’t or wouldn’t know how to solve which would leave my students just sitting around and not doing anything at all. Even though I have learned a lot in this class, I still feel like a novice who is afraid to use technology in the classroom. Since this is my first educational computer course, I am hoping that as I continue to take more computer courses and develop my computer skills that I will feel confident enough to use technology in my classroom every day. Both of the school districts that I work for use technology in the classroom every day, so I need to be able to do the same.

I think there are many benefits that the internet can add to the classroom. One of the biggest benefits I see to using the internet for classrooms is the student’s ability to access the classroom 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This means that if the student is absent, he or she doesn’t have to wait until their return to class in order to get their makeup work. This “all access pass”, so to speak, also applies to the teacher. Not only can the teacher grade papers whenever they have the time, they can allow students to turn assignments in at any time, as well. The teacher can make assignments due by 11:59 pm on Friday, January 5, 2018 if he wants too. Teachers can post their assignments on their website and students can access them whenever they want. So, if students lose the assignment they can find a copy of it on the class website and they no longer have to wait to get to class to get a new paper. The internet is also a great tool for keeping students and parents apprised of the students grades, missing assignment, and other school related information, such as school emergencies or closures. Another benefit for teachers would be that when students turn in an assignment, the computer could be programmed to grade it and put that grade in the grade book. Not having to grade as many papers would be very helpful to most teachers.

Despite the many benefits, the internet has many challenges, or drawbacks, that come with it. The biggest drawback I see is the student’s ability to “wander off” and just be playing on the internet instead of being productive. Another huge drawback is the student’s ability to bully others while online. This behavior seeps into the classroom atmosphere, contaminates it with its negativity and leaches the classroom of the cooperative nature that classrooms need to be successful.

Then, of course, is the issue of some teachers using technology to advance student learning while other teachers avoid using the internet or technology in their classrooms because of their fear of the internet and technology. While I am one of those teachers who is afraid of using technology in the classroom at this time, I am committed to learning all that I can in an effort to be able to help my students function in the world that they live in today and tomorrow.

So far, I think my philosophy of educational technology has been mostly reinforced. I still believe that using technology in the classroom is a great idea and I am still reluctant to use it, but I am more committed to learning about the different technologies available, how to incorporate them into my lesson plans, and giving my students more autonomy and ownership for their own learning. Learning how to use the different educational platforms has been reinforced, not only by this class and its online forum, but also by the schools that I currently work for and their increasing use of technology in the classroom. I am really eager to learn how to use Canvas or another educational platform from an educator’s perspective. This would be a class that I would be willing to pay for.

As an extension of the above educational philosophy, I am very concerned about my students and their lack of effort in the classroom. Many of my students claim that they are bored in the classroom and don’t see the point of going to school. Given all of the high stakes testing and the focus on curriculum that teaches to the test, I can’t blame students for being frustrated with the system yet unable to change it. Thus, one teaching idea that I am very eager to explore in my classroom is the Multi-genre Research Paper. Even though it is considered a research paper, it isn’t the traditional research paper with 5 paragraphs and parenthetical documentation. Thus, I think my students would really enjoy this project because it would allow them to pick any topic to research and then create, using any of the technology programs I found while in this class, to create a “research paper” for their topic. With this project, students have more autonomy and control over the actual paper they create and I can see this paper being one of the changes that students need to bring them back into the educational fold and make learning fun and interesting again. Here is a link to an example of a multi-genre research paper: http://www.users.miamioh.edu/romanots/pdf/bloodandbravery.pdf
