What is the problem, situation, or the concern?

Burnout refers to the phenomenon of the emotional and mental fatigue experienced by nurses due to the nature of the job (Rholetter, 2013). Emotional detachment and exhaustion, decreased feelings of success and reward, and indifference towards work are all possible results of burnout (Rholetter, 2013).

Who is directly affected?

Nurses in general are affected, but certain fields or specialties can experience burnout due to the unique challenges in those areas, such as oncology nurses experiencing frequent loss of patients and families going through the grieving process (Henry, 2014).

How, where, when, why?

There are many factors that play into how, where, when, and why burnout occurs. As mentioned previously, high emotional demand or work environments that require sustained, continuous compassion can increase the onset of burnout (Henry, 2014). New graduate nurses are also a factor in that transitioning from the academia to the professional environment lack awareness of realistic work environment and workload or cannot appropriately manage stressors (Laschinger, Borgogni, Consiglio, & Read, 2015). Poorly managed work environments also contribute to burnout (Laschinger, Borgogni, Consiglio, & Read, 2015).
