Standalone Art Lesson

This book could easily be made into a standalone art lesson and a STEAM lesson. For the art lesson, after reading the book, the teacher should instruct the children to make a magnificent thing. They could use whatever supplies they feel necessary. The teacher should encourage the children by saying that there is not one right way to create art. They should be reminded that each student’s art piece will look different, and that’s okay. This will help students learn about the creative process.

Strengths and Weakness of the Book

Weaknesses
1. The book could have a bit more colorful illustrations. I felt like many of the illustrations were beautiful but lacked color.

2. The book could also show her creative process while making her magnificent things. For example, using math while measuring.

Strengths

1. The girl is able to learn that sometimes you need to mess up a few times before you succeed. This teaches children to continue on even when they become frustrated.

2. The book helps spark interest in engineering among girls. It shows young girls that they can be inventors and builders too.

In Chapter One, the text talks about the eight studio habits of mind. One of these habits of mind is Stretch and Explore. This habit of mind involves the student learning from their mistakes and creating without a plan. The Most Magnificent Thing definitely goes along with this habit of mind. This picture book encourages children to power through their mistakes and to create something "out of the box."
