Prison visits can be described as stressful because prisoners may feel as though they may be hurt or hurt others, especially if it is close family, if they do visit the prisoner. There are also many other factors associated with why prison visits can be stressful, including high expectations vs. reality, time being very little, surveillance and more.

As we are learning only the negative of incarcerated parents has been shown. We don't see the positives, such as Tash Grahams research. Having the ability to still have a relationship/connection with your loved one is so important to the mental wellbeing of both prisoner and family member, particularly children.
Not having children visit could be out of shame, or fear for safety. Many prisoners feel their children are better off forgetting about them. My guess about 'condensed' is cramming a week or more into a 1hour approx visits. Craming in the love, hugs, learning about the adventures and fun the children are having. To many parents children are their world, and it doesn't change because you are in jail. Only the cruelest person would use the children as punishment, but there are many cruel people within the justice system.

Prison visits have been described as stressful. Why?

According to the podcast, part of the reason that prison visits are stressful is the waiting. Prisoners have to wait for their visitors to be processed and this cuts into the time that the prisoner gets to spend with their family/friends. This waiting makes the offenders agitated.
