To make it a more comfortable place (especially for the children), for example: 
  • painting the walls of visiting rooms with bright colors or murals
  • providing age-appropriate books, games, and toys for children and parents to use during visits;
  • making search procedures less invasive; and
  • using non-uniformed staff to interact with children.

Not having children visit could be out of shame, or fear for safety. Many prisoners feel their children are better off forgetting about them. My guess about 'condensed' is cramming a week or more into a 1hour approx visits. Craming in the love, hugs, learning about the adventures and fun the children are having. To many parents children are their world, and it doesn't change because you are in jail. Prisoners have to wait for their visitors to be processed and this cuts into the time that the prisoner gets to spend with their family/friends.
