Johnny´s Motivation

Johnny’s motivation is to be a better person because of how his parents treated him. Johnny even stands up to Dally when he was being rude to the girls in the movie theatre. A big part of the story and one example is when Ponyboy was upset they took a walk around the park together. Later the Socs came while they were sitting by the fountain. Bob, one of the Socs started drowning Pony so Johnny felt motivated to help Pony. In order to help Pony, Johnny stabbed and killed Bob. Johnny showed this when he said “‘I killed him,’ he said slowly. ‘I killed that boy’”(49). Another example is as they were leaving the church that they had been staying in, it started on fire while little kids were in there. Pony and Johnny ran in, to save the kids even when Dally told them not to. They were motivated to help them, and they did even though Pony and Johnny suffered in the end. Johnny’s motivation is a huge part in The Outsiders and makes Johnny who he is.

Johnny´s Strength

Johnny’s strength is being able to control his emotions. Even though his parents aren’t very good to him, he is able to keep in his anger and not explode. An example of this is when his dad abused him, he didn’t fight back, he just went to the gang’s houses and stayed away from his home. A second example is when the church is on fire he doesn’t panic, he keeps his cool and saves thy children. Pony describes the look of his bravery when he says “I got a quick look at his face; it was red marked from falling embers and sweat streaks, but he grinned at me. He wasn’t scared either”(79). Controlling his emotions helps Johnny keep calm and to do violence whenever he gets angry.

Johnny´s Flaw

Johnny’s flaw is his hair, his hair is a flaw because it represents that he’s a greaser, and greasers are known as hoodlums. Also after Johnny kills Bob and they have to hide, they also have to change their hair. They have to change their hair because it’s part of their identity and people are searching for them. Johnny shows this when he tells Pony “‘We’re gonna cut our hair, and your gonna bleach yours.’ He looked at the ground carefully. ‘They’ll have our descriptions in the paper. We can’t fit ‘em’”(61). Ponyboy is upset that he has to cut his hair because it’s one of his most prized possessions. They are in rough waters so he knows that they both have to change their hair in order to save themselves from the police.

Johnny´s Type of Character

Johnny is a protagonist because he is not working against Ponyboy (the main character), he tries to help him throughout the story. Johnny is also a dynamic character because at the beginning of the story Johnny is the sweet little innocent runt of the group. But then he goes and kills Bob and it turns him into a stronger and more confident person. After he killed Bob, even Ponyboy saw that he changed because Ponyboy said “he was a strange greenish-white, and his eyes were huger than I’d ever seen them”(49)

He is a round character because he has many layers to him. For example, Johnny starts out as just a shy boy but then you keep peeling the onion and you find a strong core of a man.

Johnny´s Personality

The personality test results said that he is an introvert. That fits with Johnny in the Outsiders because he never is the leader of the group in the beginning, as the story goes on he does become a little more confident, but it fits generally well with Johnny. The personality test also states that they are more risk takers and tougher people. This relates to Johnny because he was part of the Greasers and they would get into fights and get in trouble a lot. For example, Johnny took that risk of killing Bob and saving Ponyboy. The test also says that they easily relate to other’s emotions. This goes well with Johnny because he is always the one people can go to if they are having a rough time and he knows how they feel because he has most likely been in their position. An example of this is when Ponyboy gets slapped by Darry and runs out into the park by Johnny because he knows Johnny understands it. When Ponyboy talks to Johnny he says “‘Johnny, I’m scared’”(45) and they talk to each other about, Johnny knows how Ponyboy feels and he comforts him. Johnny is a good character and it shows throughout the story.
