Broken Promises

The theme of broken promises is prominent throughout the story, there were many broken promises especially made by the Rex. However out of all the quotes within the Memoir I chose the quote when Rex broke his promise with Jeannette to stop drinking. After Rex starts to drink again Jeannette goes on to comment, "I didn’t feel like celebrating. After all he’d put himself through, I couldn’t believe dad had gone back to the booze." The picture I chose was one of a person drinking in silhouette a more dark themed picture to depict how it was a dark moment for him to go back to alcohol and to lose a battle to his addiction.

Unconditional Love

The theme of unconditional love was sprinkled throughout the story mostly by Rex always showing his love towards Jeannette and vice versa Jeannette loving her father Rex unconditionally to a fault. I felt that unconditional love was best demonstrated in the moment where Rex told Jeannette he was going to die. After he tells her she goes on to say, "But despite all the hell-raising and destruction and chaos he had created in our lives, I could not imagine what my life would be like--what the world would be like --without him in it. As awful as he could be , I always knew he loved me in a way no one else ever had." Now as for the picture I felt it expressed the moment in which there is unconditional love however the father is telling the daughter a serious issue and I felt this was a good representation of the moment of the quote I chose a serious moment that had the theme of unconditional love sprinkled in.

Identity

I felt that identity was a theme that was mostly prevalent in the later parts of the story in which jeannette is starting to grow up. However I felt that the moment that best demonstrated the theme of identity was a quote Jeannette says after her father Rex has passed away in which she says "A year after Dad died, I left Eric. He was a good man, but not the right one for me. And Park Avenue was not where I belonged." I felt this was a good moment where she changed her identity and found out who she truly was. Now for the picture I chose the reason I chose it was I felt it represented when she was lost after her father died so she had to find out where to go and it helped her find a better meaning to herself.

Acceptance

Acceptance was a theme that was mostly displayed by Lori and Jeannette however not so much Brian. The Quote that i felt best represented the theme was the moment before Rex was going to tell Jeannette he was going to die and asked for vodka and then jeannette asks her mom if she should do it and she says "Your father is who he is. It's a little late in the game to try to reform him now. Humor the man." This was a moment in which the mother and Jeannette accepted the fact that Rex will never change he is too old and the habit is to strong. The reason for the picture is I chose a picture that displayed acceptance in how Rex will always keep drinking but I chose more of a sad picture because at the same time the mother has to accept Rex won't change because he doesn't have much time to live .

Forgiveness

I felt that in the story the theme of forgiveness is best expressed by Rose Mary . The best example I can think of is the moment after Jeannette told Rose Mary she hated Erma and after Jeannette and Rose Mary have a conversation about forgiveness which Rose Mary says,"Everyone has something good about them. You have to find the redeeming quality and love that person for that." This was a strong quotes saying that you have to have forgiveness for anyone no matter what they have done in life because they aren't all bad. The reason I chose the photo below is because I felt it best represented how Rose Mary is as a person and how she was in the quote she likes to let go and allow all her hatred fly away and tires to forgive everyone even if they have done bad things to her.

Coming of Age

A quote I felt best represented the theme of coming of age was a theme in which Jeannette was talking about how she was 18 and had a job, "I had just turned eighteen. I quit my job at the hamburger joint the next day and became a full-time reporter for The Phoenix." This shows that she has grown up already at 18 taking on a job and coming to the city and also having the ability that her parents don't have the ability to take care of herself. Now for the picture I chose it to represent that now Jeannette got a job and that was a big step in coming of age because it allows you the ability to take care of yourself a thing for Jeannette that her parents couldn't do.
