The id is only available while unconscious. It containes basic animal drives and impulses driven by instincts like hunger, thirst, sex, elimination, and aggression. Unlike other psychic structures, it is the only one that is present at birth and follows Freud's 'pleasure principle' which is the demand for instant gratification without regard to social rules or customs.

The reality principle controls the ego, and that is the basis for operating in the world by taking into account what is practical and what is acceptable. The ego looks for ways to fulfill the needs of the id without incurring social disapproval.

The superego is basically our conscience. Anywhere between 3 to 5 years old, the superego splits off from the ego, forming through a process of internalizing the moral teachings of parents or other significant figures in a child's life. A lot of the superego also acts in the unconscious, much like the id.

This stage occurs through birth to anywhere between 12-18 months. The primary erogenous zone with this stage is the mouth. The infant gets the sexual pleasure from breastfeeding and also biting objects that are nearby, as well as parents' fingers. Too much gratification in this stage can lead to smoking, nail biting, alcohol abuse, and overeating later on in life. Too little gratification can lead to passivity, clinging dependence, and a pessimistic outlook on life.

Anal Stage (1st Stage of Psychosexual Development)

This stage occurs from 18 months to 3 years old. The primary erogenous zone in this stage is the anal cavity as the child develops the ability to control waste elimination by contracting the sphincter muscles. This stage can set conflict when parents attempt to 'potty train' their children. Potty training taught too harsh can lead to what is called an 'anal-retentive personality', which causes traits such as perfectionism, extreme needs for self-control, orderliness, cleanliness, and neatness. Potty training taught too lenient can cause what is called an 'anal-expulsive personality', which leads to traits like messiness, lack of self-discipline, and carelessness.

This stage occurs through the years of 3-6. The primary erogenous zones are dependent on gender - penis, for boys, and the clitoris, for girls. One conflict with this stage is masturbation, but the primary conflict is going to be the 'Oedipus complex' which involves the development of incestuous desires for the parent of the opposite sex leading to rivalry with the parent of the same sex. Failure to resolve the Oedipus complex can cause boys to become resentful of strong masculine figures, especially authority figures. Failure to identify with the parent of the same gender may also lead to development of traits associated with the opposite gender and maybe even homosexuality.

This stage occurs anywhere between 6 years old to when the child hits puberty. There is no primary erogenous zone in this stage. The stage is named the latency stage due to the belief that sexual impulses remain latent, or dormant, during this time.
