Warfare: They were advanced  and had sailing skills, financial skills, medical skills and technological skills(weaponry) made it possible to reach places all over the world. Which the places that hey  colonized, didn't have. (They targeted weaker countries)
Trade: They colonized useful but easy to colonies. Such as, Massachusetts ,New England ,Rhode Island for whale products, ships, timber products, animal furs, maple syrup, copper, livestock products, horses, rum, whiskey and beer.
