How does Bhinneka Tunggal Ika represent Indonesians?

The creation of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika was formed in consideration of the factors like languages, religion and ethnic diversity.

When factoring languages into the motto, Indonesia has over 600 spoken languages. Bahasa Indonesian is the national language and 94% of the population is able to speak it, the most prevalent dialect is Javanese, spoken by over 30% while the other local languages are Sudanese, Maduranese, Bahasa Bugis, Minangkabau, Banjar, Acehnese and Balinese. An instance showing the range of languages is seen in the area of West Java. The most commonly spoken languages is the Indonesian language Sudanese and Javanese.

This also carries onto the concept of the film “Keluarga Cemara”, the film follows a family which moves from the city to a village in Bogor, West Java. In the film, the spoken language was colloquial Indonesian and Javanese considering the family had young children and also moved from the city. Once they moved to the village and spoke to their neighbours, they switched from colloquial Indonesian to West Javanese. This then goes on to show that Indonesians really convey the motto of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika as 17.4 per cent of Indonesians can speak more than 2 languages putting the motto into appropriate use.

Now when factoring the ethnic groups in Indonesia, Indonesia has over 1000 different ethnic groups (WIKIPEDIA, 2022)
The following graph shows the most prevalent ethnic groups. The top 3 are Javanese, Sudanese and Malay. The motto is embodying Indonesians if factoring ethnicity, as it shows the morals of Indonesians, that they are diverse and that although they are diverse, they still find harmony and inclusivity even despite their diverse ethnic backgrounds.

And lastly, religion is another discussed factor of the motto. The assembly of the 6 main religions includes Modernist Islam, Traditional Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism and Buddhism. Considering all of these religions are accepted and acknowledged by the government, their policy allows the appeal for different public holidays and caters for different religions. These religious holidays include Nyepi day, Eid, Christmas, Ramadan, Chinese New Year etc. Which leads back to the motto that Indonesia does truly find the concept to unite in many different aspects and in this case shows how Indonesians unite in aspects like languages, ethnicity and religion.

Why is Bhinneka Tunggal Ika Important?

Language plays a big part in the importance of the motto. Without the extensive variety of languages in Indonesia over the years, the motto would be meaningless to the significance of diversity. Essentially the motto is important to the languages as it appreciates the beauty and also shows acceptance.

Indonesia is also known as an archipelago, which is an extensive group of islands. Reflecting on the massive number of islands (17000), a mix of religions, ethnicities and languages are formed. (Indonesia Investments, 2022)
And now in Indonesian society today there are more than 1000 different ethnic groups and over 300 languages. Ethnic backgrounds and groups are also a big part of the importance of the motto. It essentially represents how even though the mix of ethnic backgrounds in Indonesia is varied, Indonesians are seen as not all divided or separate from one another, but they are rather seen as a whole.

Lastly, religion is another aspect that is important to the motto. The motto is used as a source in the government's core values. They use the motto as a guide and essentially they don’t allow the certain authority of some religions over others but are inclusive and most importantly unite.

Indonesia is one of the most linguistic countries in the world and incorporates a variety of different dialects and languages. Many Indonesians are trilingual as the scatter of these languages around the country is regular. This use of varied languages by many Indonesian individuals is implemented throughout the nation which also links to how the motto connects to this.

Ethnic groups are also a big contribution to how the motto relates to this. In everyday life, Indonesia shares close cultures and traditions with one another. And the varied ethnic groups consider food, family, friends, work, etc and impact everyday life routines.

Lastly, religion, the variety of religious celebrations which includes the public holidays throughout the year are implemented through the combination of other religions rather than just one. Things like attending a Christian or Catholic church, Islamic Mosque, Temples etc. are all available to the public and the community can be brought together from this.

For my inquiry-based task, I aimed to discover what really makes Indonesia such a diverse country and how the influence of so many languages, ethnic groups and religions contribute to this. I wanted to determine how these factors were even formed.
My inquiry ideas originated with the goal to determine how the motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika was formed and the significance it has towards Indonesian identity.

My task focused on questions that were broken down into elements which considered: the representation that the motto had towards Indonesians, the significance and importance of the motto, and how the motto is even relevant to everyday life.

While the purpose of my research was to address the main topic of how Indonesians truly identify with this motto even when considering the vast array of diversity that surrounds. I wanted to achieve the outcome of summarising the motto with advanced research on the topic.

I chose my certain inquiry questions because I persistently wanted to confirm the ideas and information from different perspectives, so the formation of opinions and ideas are relevant, solid and accurate to the topic.
I chose strong and broad questions so I could answer them in depth.
Some key features of my task which add an effective view are the graphics and layout of my presentation. This layout of images and words makes the presentation engaging and interesting.

My chosen form of presentation was in the form of a padlet, the use of this helps to correlate the images and informative graphs with the following information. The use of the padlet is educational and engaging and provides easy access to grasp and understand.
