He doesn't like to draw attention to himself because he fears that other people will figure out his secret; he's gay. When he found out that some other kids felt the same way, he started to become a little more comfortable with himself. He even helped create a club for other gay students.

REVIEW

⭐⭐⭐⭐ out of 5 stars
Geography Club by Brent Hartinger was a very interesting book about a boy trying to come to terms with his sexuality. He wanted to find other kids at his school in a similar situation. I like how the author explains certain parts of the book by using metaphors. It did, however get a bit bland at some points with very drawn out, unnecessary conversations. I liked how the book was realistic. Russel was so obsessed with trying to fit in, he followed the crowd and ended up bullying a kid that he didn't want to. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it.

In the beginning of the book, Russel was definately not a leader; he just followed the crowd. Towards the end though, he began to show signs of a true leader. For example: In the end of the book, instead of waiting for Kevin to end the relationship, Russel took control and did it himself. He also sat with Brian, the kid that everyone hates at school, at lunch. This shows that he doesn't let what others think stop him from doing what he believes is right.
