SIDE: Others are being sent to concentration camps and dying.

HIDDEN: Mamashi is very nervous and she doesn't want her or her family to die but she tries to make calm in front of her kids.

Side - Many people are suffering and dying a sad death and being separated from their families.

Hidden - The mother, Mamishu fights to stay strong for her families sake.

Side- The other families either had been killed because they needed a maximum of 120 alive Jews, or sent to concentration camps

Hidden- Micheal is the youngest Jew and nothing had happened to him , usually they kill the younger people because they are no help. I have a feeling that Micheal is going to stay strong through it with the love of his family.

side- the Nazis are continuing to oppress the Jews and distance German children from people who really care about their well being.

hidden- alfons is being distanced from his family and his grandmother is trying to get him to leave the Hitler youth but he wont do it cause he has been indoctrinated into the Nazi ideology.

Side- The bombing of pearl harbor, causing America to join the war.

Hidden- Be mindful of hatred because people have different opinions on a certain group of people and when those opinions turn into widespread hate it causes the group of people to get severely harmed.

Side - America has joined the war after Pearl Harbor, and many Jews are being hunted, murdered, and gassed.

Hidden - Too much hatred can control your actions.

Side-The world around them is changing with the Nazis still targeting the Jews.

Hidden-The main characters are being slowly taken away from their family by their own decisions

Side-The world for the Jews is constantly changing

Hidden- Alfons family wants him to leave the Hitler youth but he doesn't want to because of the Nazis and what they did to him

Side- As the more time goes on the worse it gets for the Jews

Hidden- Alfons loved ones want to leave Germany with him but he does not want to leave because of the Germans influence.

Side-People are getting killed and burned alive in other places in Poland

Hidden-The Bornstein family is scared about what is going to happen while they are at Auschwitz

Side- Jewish Families are being targeted by Nazi soldiers and European citizens and are getting business taken from them, families being separated, and people killed

Hidden- The father Isreal risks his life multiple times for hisu family, he tries to stay strong for his wife and kids but its terrified for the outcome of the war.

Side - other people in their Hometown are being moved away to concentration camps for cruel punishments and death, even though they are doing nothing wrong, for a lot of different families.

Hidden - Mamishu i was trying to stay strong and to do the best she can while protecting her family and trying out to seem nervous and acting like she has a plan for the sake of her family

Side-many others are also getting attacked, but also others are being sent to concentration camps to be killed.

Hidden- there family is very worried about whats going to happen and how there going to stay alive

Side: Innocent Jewish men and women are being separated from their families. Many of these people get sent to camps and die there.

Hidden: Mamishu has to get rid of Ruth to keep her safe. But neither of them want to leave each other

side America joined the war and its getting worse for the Jews everyday

hidden the Nazi army is starting to lose the battle with Russia and Alfons is choosing the Hitler youth over his family

Side- The Nazis are just taking their course and doing what they set out to do sadly the Jews are all mainly forced into hiding

Hidden- The writers are slowly being torn apart from their family and Alfon is being pressured into leaving the Hitler youth but he is choosing this over his family.

Side: A lot of innocent Jews are being killed or removed from there families.

Hidden: Ruth is taken to a Maids house and then Later goes to an Orphanage and is turning Catholic.

Side-Bigger society changes, such as the Civil Rights Movement and advancements in technology.

Hidden-The struggles with racism and sexism that encourage the woman. They have to keep pushing to make everyone equal.

Side: Other Jews are getting sent to concentration camps and they are dying.

Hidden: Mamashi tries to stay strong in front of her kids but she is very nervous and she does not want her family to die.

Side- The Jewish people are being slaughtered,separated, and tortured by the Nazis

Hidden- Many live in constant fear of being killed or sent to the camps and can't live normally

Side- While working for NASA these women and other Negro women helped create changes in the way white people viewed people of color. Which led into society changes; such as, more people of color especially women get better paying jobs and recognition for contributions they've done.

Hidden- This book shows the problems people in the past had with colored individuals along with women. It also exhibited how everyone in that day of age had a category they had to stick to, if it was broken they would be greatly frowned upon.

Side- Many Jews are being killed sometimes ever for no reason but it is happening everywhere in Zarki

Hidden- Many are worried about family that they haven't seen or are being sent away somewhere else

Side- It talks about events that are happening like movements against racism, the war that is happening, and the improvement of the technology within the airplanes. It kinda shows how these improvements in technology with the planes will eventually impact Dorthy and the rest of the people at NACA.

Hidden- Throughout the story, it doesn't only focus on Dorothy, and her struggle with racism in this world, but also on other people and the criticism they face as well as how they react to that.

Side- Many Jewish people are being forced to go to concentration camps and are being separated from their loved ones. To add on they are being killed at the camps.

Hidden- The mother decides to get rid of Ruth, leading her to wonder how she is and if she is safe. To add on, she didn't want to get rid of her but she didn't want to risk getting separated from her.

Side- This was happening all over the world. They didn't want black people and white people anywhere near each other, so they separated them and sometimes didn't even consider them for jobs.

Hidden- Everybody knew this was happening, but nobody was willing to try to break the barrier because they were scared about what would happen if they failed.

Side: Nazi Germany becomes more aggressive, and pushes/harms Jews even more, trying to oppress and eradicate them.

Hidden: The main characters are being pushed or possibly could be forced away from their families, but for very different reasons, and with very different consequences if they were to stay.

Side: Only 120 Jews got to stay in Zarki to work, and the others were sent to concentration camps or killed. At Auschwitz most people were killed and burned, but Michael's family was one of the last ones to survive at least for now.

Hidden: Jews were being shot, killed, or burned for no reason other than they were Jews. This made people scared all the time. It is wrong to persecute people just because they are different from you.

Side - 120 Jews were able to stay in Zarki to work, everyone else was sent to concentration camps or was killed. People were being separated from their families and having to give up people they love.

Hidden - Lots of people are suffering, dying brutal and cruel deaths, as well as trying to survive not only the Nazis but also with little resources. Michael's parents had to stay strong and not show how scared they were so they could have a better chance of surviving and help other be less scared.

Side-The Nazis continue oppressing the Jews and America joins in on the war.

Hidden-The Nazis are brainwashing children like Alfons and making them believe that Hitler is good and they should follow his beliefs.

Side: Martin's father is an alcoholic, sometimes getting really drunk and using his money on drinks rather than the family. He was also laid off from his paper making company.

Hidden: It talks about not knowing truly what someone is going through, like how Martin is very poor and struggling and Caitlin is dealing with inflation in America.

Side: The Nazis slowly oppress the jews and people not of Hitlers divine race more and more until they are forced out of germany

Hidden: People are choosing Hitler over their families and Hitler is being untrustworthy and Alfons still is choosing him over his own family

Side-Jews continue getting oppressed, its not safe for them and the environment becomes more and more hostile.

Hidden-people are being taken from there families ad separated. Alfons choosing the ideals of Hitler over the people he loves

Side: All of Caitlin's friends are dumping their problems onto Caitlin and she can't deal with it anymore.

Hidden: They don't talk about some things more personal like how Caitlin in America is dealing with broken growth plates and how that's affecting her life. And how poor Martin is and how he doesn't have a decent pair of shoes

Side: The United States and other countries are fighting Nazi Germany to stop there reign of terror

Hidden: Every few months the extended family gets together to celebrate holidays for a little joy

Main- Michael struggles in a cruel world run by Nazis as they see their loved ones die, left and right.

Side: The US finally joins the fight, as the Nazis try to eliminate all Jews one and for all.

Hidden: Once in a while, at great risk, the whole family gathers together to enjoy themselves, a rare feeling in these times.

Side: People are dying in these other camps.

Hidden: The nazis are shutting down the camp the family is at so they are going to be sent to Auschwitz.

Side: There is so much death and ruin around everything.

Hidden: Mamishu is doing everything she can to keep her family safe from death.

Side: The death toll of Jews is rising every single day.

Hidden: Mamishu is making sure her family is well and alive.

Side- Mamishus's Mother, an older Woman is allowed into Auschwitz which is usually very unlikely. She has much bigger expectations of her because of the acceptance.

Hidden- The people who couldn't take the traveling to Auschwitz and died of things such as the heat, starvation, or the cramped arrangement in the cart.

Side: Caitlin's best friend Lauren being intentionally antagonistic towards Caitlin and being quite mean and refusing to understand Caitlin, Martin's brothers Simba and Nation have there lives that aren't brought to the surface as much as.

Hidden: This story tells us to use kindness to treat others how you want to be treated in Caitlin's side and shows us that you never know what somebody is going through

Side- Other people in different towns and in their town were being sent away to the concentration camps and were not able to stay in their town. They got removed from their family's and a lot of people died just on the train ride over from lack of water. Like his grandparents

Hidden- The fathers strategy will ultimately fail and him and his whole family will be sent away to a work camp and then a concentration camp. People should not be treated like his just because of their religion.

Side-Other Jewish people are getting sent to camps and dying everywhere.

Hidden- Mamishu/Sophie is very worried and scared about what is to come but keeps a calming face and body language to comfort her children.

Side-Others are also taken to these concentration camps and some have endured more pain and suffering than others via a family member being killed or taken away from them.

Hidden-Michael's mother is worried about not seeing her sons again and feels bad that she didn't keep a gift from one of her sons.

Side- On the sidelines many people are trying to survive as well, but many Jews are becoming like the Nazi guards so they can survive as long as possible with being sum what invisible.

Hidden- Both the parents are sacrificing their lives trying to save their family and friends without being killed.

Side- Germany, and the world in general has changed for the worst, for Alfons, Helen, and all the people of Germany.

Hidden- Helen's family will be separated through the war in Germany, and she will either never see them again, or not see them for a lengthy amount of time. As for Alfons, he is being distanced from his Grandma due to the fact that she is trying to get him out of the Hitler Youth Program.

Side- tens of thousands of others have also been seperated and are being killed every single day because of the nazis.

Hidden-Michaels mother is trying not to be seperated from her children so she can protect them but shes forced to give up.

Side: The jews are being treated worthlessly and are just being tossed around by the nazi's like its a game.

Hidden: Michael's family is very fearful because they don't know if they are gonna be the next family killed.

Side- while they were in the infirmary people were getting killed because they were worried that the camp would be shut down soon

Hidden- Michael was very lucky to get sick because if had not gotten sick he probable would not have survived.

Side: The jews of Auschwitz are being murdered by the Nazi's for no reason

Hidden: The family is worried that they got seperated

side- people were getting murdered

hidden - if michael didn't get sick he would have been killed by individuals.

Side: Catlin is becoming distant from her friends more and more because they keep coming to her for everything. Martin is having financial struggles with his family and is unable to afford school fees.

Hidden: Catlin doesn't know how bad Martin is struggling with poverty and only knows that hes not very wealthy.

Side- Everyday the world gets worse and worse for the Jews to be able to survive in.

Hidden- The events that happen around people can change their motives, opinions, and views on what they had on something before. The things said and done around them can change a person as an individual.

Side- Caitlin and her mom are trying to get a full ride scholarship for Martin but no one wants to give him one.

Hidden- The schools don't know how much Martin needs this and how smart he is.

Side- Helen get out of Auschwitz and gets sent to a different camp that is not as detrimental

Hidden- As time goes on Helen and Alfons learn valuable life skills and persevere through the challenges they are sent through

Side - People were being reunited with family if they were still alive, most returned to not much left so they wanted to set off to America where they could restart.

Hidden - Survivors of the Holocaust went through a lot of pain and suffering and wanted to make the most out of what they had left.

Side-Ruth and her family reunited after being separated because of the war.

Hidden-Many people were effected from the inhumane acts from Nazis not just Jews but also people who spoke out against the Nazis.

side- Helen and Alfons need immense courage too speak about their pasts and face the backlash from the public

hidden- people find it very hard to forgive people for things they were only related too, even if they didn't cause or add to the event. Alfons who didn't even believe the pictures from concentration camps were real, yet people still blame him for what happened in them.

Side: So many people are being killed everywhere.

Hidden: The family are all terrified by their future in auschwitz

Side: The Bornstein famil,y though broken, all succeed in their own ways. For example, the Uncles' successful later business and Aunt Hilda making it to Cuba.

Hidden: Bobeshi is left alone in the Zarki Ghetto back in Europe. She states that she is too old for another adventure.

Side: after the war was over, many families were reunited with whatever family they still have left who are alive.

Hidden: there were a lot of people affected by the war, not just the Jewish people but rather many people all different cultures. Anyone who spoke out against the Nazis would not have a good time, whether jewish or not.

Side: Many people were reunited with their families.

Hidden: Many people died and were not able to see their family member ever again.

Side - Surviving members of Michaels family are being reunited and have to deal with others who want Jews out of the country.

Hidden - Life without the Nazi's is weird as somethings stuck such as the hatred towards Jews but others are confusing to Michael such as having to live with his Auschuwitz name sticking with him for the rest of his life.

side: Lots of jews were brought to their families

hidden: but some jews didn't get to see their family because they died

Side- Micheal found his mother and all their family and had a good timing being with them again

Hidden- Micheal and his family had to learn stuff so they can live in America and be free with there family

Side- After they were released from the camp people were stuck on where to go because some people didn't know if there was anyone they knew was left. But most of the people went to America so they can have a fresh start to life again.

Hidden- People that survived and that were still living went through so much pain and so much suffering and want to just get out and be free. Furthermore, what ever they had left in them they want to spend because they didn't know if they were going to make it.

Side - Germany is starting to lose the war and their efforts to win are struggling as so many people have already died.

Hidden - people need to be more aware of their surroundings and what is happening around them

Side: Caitlin breaks up with Damon because he is too immature and doesn't believe in Caitlin.

Hidden: It shows how with great determination and believing in yourself, you can achieve a lot. For example, Caitlin and her family never gave up trying to help Martin, which after a long time, were able to get Martin to America.

Side- Many other people were getting freed from the camp and reunited with their family

Hidden- Life will never be the same for these people that were in the camps and have been affect forever

Side - Germany is starting to lose the war and their efforts to win are struggling as so many people have already died.

Hidden - people need to be more aware of their surroundings and what is happening around them

Side- Both main characters have courage and are very brave to even speak about their dark pasts and deal with the judgement from the public.

Hidden- Alfons had no idea what was going on in the concentration camps but people still blamed him. People will always judge and be unforgiving to others just because of who they know or who theyre related to dispite the fact they did nothing wrong.

Side- Sometimes it is difficult for people to speak about their past because people may judge them based on events that happened.

Hidden- Helen and Alfons are sending a message to everyone through their pasts. They are helping people understand how the Holocaust happened, and ensuring that events like this would never happen again.

Side- Michael's uncles start a leather business in America, Aunt Hilda is in Cuba with her new husband, and Bobeshi is living the rest of her life in Zarki.

Hidden- The Bornstein and Jonish family will never be the same after what they have seen during the war but they are trying to make the most of their life.

Side- Alfons and Helen use their courage and bravery to speak publicly about their past and face the public's disapproval.

Hidden- You must be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Side : Mamishu gets sent to a different concentration camp

Theme statement: Being a different color doesn't mean that they should be treated differently.

Side- Dorthoy and Mary's life at home and in the workplace, it was mostly about them at the beginning but now the focus is shifting more towards Kathrine. Dorthoy is struggling to find her place in the company again after the West Side Computing got taken away, and Mary is trying to step into her role as an engineer on this aircraft.

Hidden- Mary, Kathrine, and Dorthoy all struggle with different things throughout the story. A main thing that is affecting all of them is both racism and sexism in their workplace. The are constantly being told they can't do something because they either are women, or because they are black.

Main- The first orbit around Earth was successful leading into the next huge step allowing the research to get a man on the moon to start. America was finally catching up to its competitors in the great space race.

Side- Katherine checked all of the calculations for the first aircraft that orbited around Earth, only for her efforts to be swiped away on the sideline. Moreover, she worked long and hard days figuring out different projects, correctly calculating important formulas, and most importantly doing different attributes someone important to human history should get credit for.

Hidden- Racism and sexism still carry on even with the new laws created against segregation.

Side: Mamishu deals on the black market, she buys American luxury items and sells them for money for America

Hidden: Uncle David, and Uncle Moniek have a successful leather making business. Momishu is helping both of them with their business, she is doing this to also make money for America

Side- Babishu stays back in Zarki because she is elderly and wants to stay in her hometown.

Hidden- The Bornstein family and Jonsich family have left their trauma behind but it will never really pass. They choose to move forward knowing their is no time to waste without taking a long period of time to grieve.

Side-The U.S. finally saw what was happening and started to fight against the Nazis which released Micheal and his Babeshi.

Hidden-After everything, the family will get together to celebrate their religion, but they have to be careful because there are still Christians who hate on Jews still.

Side-Dorothy was struggling to find her place in the company again like the beginning.

Hidden-All three girls struggle with different thing throughout the book, but all three girls struggle with racism and sexism.

Side- Both Alfons and Helen speak on the past and face what's coming for them.

Hidden- Watch for the people you are surrounded by.

Side: Before they could get to America, they had to stay in Munich with a landlady who wore a swastika necklace. She didn't like Jews, but she was nice to Michael after he got attacked.

Hidden: Even in America, Michael still didn't feel like he fit in at school because of the numbers on his arm. Life would never be the same for them again after all that they had been through.

Side: Martin is not scoring too high on his SAT tests and Caitlin's mom has to work extra hard and reach out to schools in order for him to get that full ride to college.

Hidden: Schools are declining Martin without knowing more about him and really knowing his story. They don't know is life story, all he has been through, and especially how smart of a kid he really is.

side- Both characters try to be strong. With the negativity and backlash, they try to keep there heads up. As they know its there responsibility to teach others and show them the truth of what happened.

hidden-Its hard for people to see others perspectives. They understand the horrors of the Holocaust yet can't understand the brainwashing. Many can't properly imagine the situation from the point of view of the kids brought up in it. Fueling part of there travels, to educate.

side - when released from the camp, people did not know where to go

hidden - people who survived suffer tremendously.

Side- They both talk about their past and their point of view in public and were confident enough to be able to deal with being judged.

Hidden- Everyone has different thoughts on things Alfon really didn't know much about what happened in concentration camps or really what was happening to the Jews. He still didn't do something that was right but overall if he knew he might not have gone along with it.

Side: Before they could go get to America that had to stay with a land lady who whore a swastika necklace and hated Jews. But was Kind to Michael after he was attacked

Hidden: America would never be as great as it could be for him. America still wasn't much of a fun of the Jews and he would have to go through for a long time because things will never be the same

Side: Before they can go to america they had to stay in munich, but the land lady for the apartment they had was wearing a big swastika necklace. but they learned that she was not that bad and they eventually considerd each other friends.

Hidden: when their in amerca michael still didn't feel like he fit in because the other school children would make fun of the numbers on his arms. He would never feel the normal because of what happened at Auschwitz.
