Traditional craftsmanship is perhaps the most tangible manifestation of intangible cultural heritage.

Today was all about crafts and culture. In the local tourist office we got a workshop in coconot leaf weaving from experts. With this technique it is possible to weave baskets, but also for example belts, bags, hats and bookmarks.

It took a while before I understood the technique. You first have to cut the palm branches and then braid them according to certain recurring techniques. The expert and Rita helped me because I always forgot the technique. The technique is part of the culture in Reunion and is transferred from parents to descendants.

I made a bookmark and a fish. It was a very interesting experience to learn from this craftsmanship. You need a lot of patience and time to do this. I think it would be nice to show it in class.

Crafts in action
We often look at everyday objects and admire their beauty (remember the instrument that Jack played yesterday? N'goni donso?) Quite often a simple object requires a lot of skill and knowledge to produce it.
So today we tried our hand at weaving using the palm leaves. The group that assembled with 2 teachers had children and adults. It was fascinating to notice that children understood the pattern of weaving much quicker than the adults! Two from one side, then two from the other side... One goes parallel, another goes diagonal... And we all got lost... While we were struggling with the first steps, the girl next to me finished her 50 cm band and asked the teacher to show how to make a band using 3 strips!!!
Arts and crafts are becoming more and more valued by schools. The increase interest and motivation to explore one are bring the knowledge and understanding to another - I was making a band, but all I could think of was repeated pattern, order, geometry, maths, value in relation to time consumed.

Weaving used to be for survival purposes. Nowadays, it is used mainly for decorative art, but doing so preserves our culture. Teaching the people allows for the passing of traditional skills and traditions to more people - children get inspired in presevering the culture.

This day was about crafts. Typical for Réunion is the craft of weaving palm leafs. We gathered in the local tourism center for an introduction in weaving. I actually expected an excursion to a village in the mountains, sitting in a circle and weaving baskets for life. Nevertheless, it was a hard nut to crack. I wasn't that easy at all, even though there was a structure in it, which I kept forgetting.

"Zéro,
Erste Mal,
Zweite Mal,
Letzte Mal,
Horizontal,
Derrière!"

Conclusion: I learnt about the complexity of craftmanship with weaving. I am not certain to ever to this again, but it was a nice experience.

The life so short, the crafts so long to learn.
Geoffrey Chaucer

Everyday things come from centuries-old craftsmanship. These days almost all things are made in the factory, but culture is preserved and guarded in the old crafts. Today we tried to learn something from the old crafts of Reunion: weaving palm leaves.

I found it extremely difficult to master and that is precisely why it is so important that we do not forget these old crafts and give up from generation to generation. A big part of a culture of a country or population is found in old crafts.

Today we went to a workshop about basket weaving. They explained multiple techniques to us, but the German was probably my favourite. Das Erste Mal, Zweite Mal and Letztes Mal became famous quotes during the session and will be something I will never forget. The technique requires upmost concentratiekamp to avoid making mistake. It took me a while to get it. I made a bookmark which I’m very proud of. It was a very interesting experience to learn this type of craftmanship.
