Nursing in the United States: Civil War Period 1861-1865

During the civil war, nurses battled with many health epidemics such as syphilis, malaria, smallpox, and typhoid. Nurses providing care during the war to soldiers were subjected to unsanitary conditions, leading to fatal infections. The image selected reflects this time period as it is a time of brutal war resulting in many fatalities. Nurses were caring for wounded soldiers. This time period affects current nursing practice in many ways. It affects the need of infection prevention and sanitary standards. There only being 2000 nurses care for 6 million hospitalized during this time period is also a reflection of our short staffing today. White nurses were also being paid more than African-American nurses, reflecting on the need for pay equality for minorities in healthcare.

The Renaissance 1400 - 1600 AD

This image of the Renaissance time period reflects on a time where there were greta medical advances of their time, although nursing as a whole was not at the forefront of healthcare. Tasks that nurses would later be carrying out were typically carried out women that were associated with religious groups. Care was mostly provided by those with little education to do so and typically provided care within the homes of the ill.

1700's - 1900's: Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole was a Jamaican nurse that was known for providing care to the sick in a lodging house. She wrote a letter to the British government during the Crimean War in an attempt to join forces with Florence Nightingale to provide care during the war. She was denied her request solely because she was black. Mary had much knowledge and wisdom to share with other nurses through her experiences serving as a nurse in various parts of the world.

Nursing in the Last 10 Years: COVID-19 2020

Nurses feared taking an illness home to their families and spreading it to their patients. They had to advocate for themselves and their patients differently than ever before.

2023 Times Magazine: Solving the U.S. Nursing Shortage

Times Magazine discusses the nursing shortage and what they think will solve it. They recognize the profession's importance and how nurses old enough to retire have never known adequate staffing levels. They urge the government to allow nurses from other countries to come on work visas in order to combat the dire need for more nurses.

2023 CNN: "A Crisis in Nursing is Upon us"

CNN interviews a 45 year veteran Emergency Department registered nurse who states that you will soon not be able to run across a nurse that has been in this profession long term. They also state that is it troubling to see the career dissatisfaction in younger nurses, causing concern for the number of nurses to decrease over time.
