The painting represent a sporting competition that is not precisely identified but river races were a typical entertainment of the time, and as the painting shows, such events attracted large crowds of people.
The flag of the boat bears the coat of arms of the then Pope Benedict XIV.
In the painting's sales catalog of the time, it was said that the painting contained portraits of the artist, Vernet, his wife and her father. In fact, the man in blue is more likely to be the French ambassador who commissioned the painting.
This was one of four paintings Vernet sent from Rome to Paris for the 1750 Paris Salon.
Also Vernet loved to represent classic landscapes and the technique used is that of oil canvas.

A Latin inscription explain that Cupid has stolen a honeycomb and a bee has stung him.
Venus's elaborate headdress also display a maximum in German, meaning 'all is vanity'. The message of the picture is therefore that life's pleasures are fickle and brief, while pain is enduring.

Later a divine hand appeared where he wrote in Hebrew: "God hath numbered thy kingdom, and finished it. Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting". 
Belshazzar was killed the same night.

During van Gogh's 10 years as a painter, he painted almost 900 works. He suffered mental health issues for many years. After his release from Hospital Arles in January 1889, Van Gogh embarked on a series of still lifes, including crab studies. This painting may show the same crab upright and on its back. In this painting, Vincent van Gogh worked in bright and bold colors with lively brushstrokes. Rather than a bad thing, van Gogh's color blindness turns out to be a good thing in terms of his art.

Irises were Monet’s favourite flowers, and he cultivated many different species, planting them in both his flower garden and his water garden.
The flowers had originated in Japan and featured in the Japanese prints Monet so admired.
It is not clear whether the artist regarded the picture as finished, since it remained in his studio at his death.
