The National Basketball Association (NBA) was Officially Integrated in 1950

In the year 1950, racial segregation in the National Basketball Association was finally put to an end. On April 25th, 1950, Charles Henry Cooper officially broke integrated professional basketball by becoming the first African American to play for the Boston Celtics. Although Cooper’s place in the NBA created a feeling of acceptance towards the black community, racial discrimination did not stop. Since the Boston Celtics was a team composed of mostly all-white players, Cooper experienced constant racial harassment on the court and in his everyday career. Cooper was able to push through the racism to show himself as a role model to many young black people today and back then. By being the first African American to break racial and cultural barriers in the NBA, Cooper changed history for the better.

The First Game of Wheelchair Basketball was Played in 1946

After the second world war, a number of war veterans were left physically disabled. For many veterans, their will to play sports never went away after the war. They desired to play no matter the physical circumstances they were in. For this reason, the start of Wheelchair Basketball began. On November 25, 1946, the first game of Wheelchair Basketball was played by a group of war veterans in the United States. By being the first sport to be played by people who were physically disabled, Wheelchair basketball created a new diversity in sports. Wheelchair Basketball allows for diversity in the sports community, by giving individuals the opportunity to play the sport they love regardless of their physical disabilities. Wheelchair Basketball was also one of the 8 sports which was played in the first-ever Paralympics.

A Fan Attacks Laz Diaz on the Field in 2003

On April 15th, 2003, during a game between the Chicago White Sox and the Kansas City Royals, an intoxicated fan ran onto the field to tackle one of the umpire. The umpire Laz Diaz quickly fought back before any harm could be done to him. However, the fan was still sentenced to 180 days in jail and one month of probation for aggravated battery. As sports games should be a centre for entertainment where fans can come together to celebrate their favourite sports, they can often become corrupted by violent behaviour. Violence in sports is often seen to arise from a disrespect for the players or abuse of alcohol. Violence should never be the decision of someone who truly respects the game and is very unnecessary.
