The colony of Georgia was created by James Oglethorpe and his trustee's for two major reasons. The first is that the colony could be a great military buffer between the Spanish colony of Florida and the British Colonies up north. Because of this, Oglethorpe constructed military forts and fortified towns across Georgia. The second reason Georgia was founded was because Oglethorpe felt bad for poor farmers in England, who were imprisoned because of their debt and often died in jail. In the colony, poor English farmers like this could start a new life and work as farmers and soldiers. Although the original goal of the colony was not to make money, many settlers began to press Oglethorpe to allow the use of slaves to help grow and harvest crops. When Oglethorpe refused, many settlers began to migrate into Southern Carolina, where there were fewer laws regarding farming. In 1750, Oglethorpe removed the ban on slavery, which caused an influx of African slaves to be transported to the colony. By 1770, almost half of the non-Indian population of Georgia was African slaves.
- Founded as a military buffer and refuge for poor English farmers
- Originally slavery was prohibited
- Became slavery oriented after the ban was revoked by Oglethorpe

The main reason for the settlement of Carolina was to make money as landlords. The goal of the Carolina founders was to attract settlers from other colonies, so they did not have to fund expensive trips from Britain. When this failed, a number of founders quit, and only one man named Anthony Ashley Cooper persisted. Cooper attracted new settlers from the British colony Barbados, who brought over African slaves. Because many of the settlers moved into what is now South Carolina, the rich soil and abundance of natural resources allowed for large plantations to flourish with the help of African slaves.
- Founded to make money
- Angelics
- Allowed anyone who wished to live in the territory
- Allowed religious freedom to anyone that followed Christianity
- Centered around farming

Map of Charles Town, Carolina (1704)

After being banned from Massachusetts for arguing that the Church of Massachusetts should be completely separate from the Church of England, and that church and state should be separate, Roger Williams founded the colony of Rhode Island. Because Williams was banned from Massachusetts for his religious beliefs, the colony of Rhode Island became a sanctuary for people of all religions. Furthermore, after receiving a charter from the British Parliament allowing him to create a government in Rhode Island, the colony of Rhode Island gave no support to the Church.
- Main reason for founding was religious freedom
- Formed by a Separatist
- Allowed settlers to practice any religion they choose
- Separates church and state
- Government gives no support to the Church
