Art & Science of Teaching

In my honest opinion, I believe that the nature of teaching requires both art and science.

Upon reading, I discover that art is a process that appeals to senses and emotions which has the purpose of communicating ideas. To me, this is reflected upon the process of delivering and sharing of content knowledge.

Having being made as one of the field for scientific studies, it is easy to say that teaching is a science. When we say that there are hypotheses, named methods and analysed evaluation of techniques, one can easily see how 'science" a teaching really is.

As of my position, I would rather stand towards the fact that as an educator, I must learn and discover the knowledge of the science is teaching (philosophy, methods, principles, etc.), then mold them into practice to produce a unique art in educating, nurturing and reforming generations after generations of learners, to turn them into valued treasures of nation as well as the creative people that will forge their way towards a brighter future.

"Though classroom instructional strategies should clearly be based on sound science and research, knowing when to use them and with whom is more of an art." -The Art and Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction, a book by Robert J. Marzano.

Implementing Teaching for University Classrooms

There are three most important aspects in university teaching and learning that I will explain to a new lecturer assigned to be mentored by me. Firstly, I will explain the education system implemented in UNIMAS that is the outcome based education (OBE). OBE is an educational philosophy where teaching learning content and evaluation is based upon a predetermined objectives. As a new lecturer, he or she must first analyze objectives, design assessments accordingly, develop learning materials, then implement and evaluate students performance in the course the new lecturer is assigned to. I will remind that care has to be taken in ensuring objectives must be measurable, course contents are relevant, updated and delivered, as well as assessments are achievable. I will also follow-up on the new lecturer's progress in adapting towards OBE frequently. For a good practice, the new lecturer may try to visit the lecture halls to get accustomed with logistics and rehearse the lecture first before going to the class.

Secondly, class preparation is imperative and must be handled properly. One good suggestion I can give to the new lecturer is to study ADDIE model or Gagne Briggs model. The two models serve a clear and good guidelines in readying an appropriate instructional design for classroom sessions later. Preparation is essential for the students to be able to cope to the learning content and achieve the objectives and outcomes of every sessions. Again, the new lecturer should use formative assessment to obtain students' feedback and measure their understanding of the content so far. Some of best practices that can be applied here includes varying the types of lecture delivery and include signposts during class session.

Last but not least, I would encourage the new lecturer to read and understand philosophies in teaching and learning. The new lecturer can familiarize him/herself in constructivism as UNIMAS is gearing towards education in industrial revolution 4.0. The lecturer can then restructure and reorganize his/her teaching plan and instructional design to support constructivist theory in teaching and learning. This is to prepare the students and equip them to be mentally ready for their future studies while in the Center or latter in respective faculties. As a reflection, the new lecturer should check his/her way of exercising teaching learning practice whether it fits the constructivism philosophy, and students' response are also important to measure their acceptance towards the class sessions. The good practice that the new lecturer may want to consider is to have a personalized instructions that suit the needs of the students in accordance to their surroundings and to encourage participation.

If I am to compose my "Last Lecture", I would write my legacy in three sections: my past, present and future. For the "past" section, I would describe on three aspects, including:
a) Becoming an educator (a lecturer) had never been my ambition.
b) My transition from science
stream (school) to physical science (pre-university) then computer science (bachelor), and finally maths (master).
c) Teaching of peers happens informally through my entire study years.

For the "present" section, I would touch on the following:
a) I love to teach, and feel satisfied with my teaching performance in class, but student performance would say the opposite.
b) My desire on improving learner performance introduced me towards student-centred learning.
c) By research, I found that learning process is more important then the content to create graduates with lifelong learning.
d) Hence, my career endeavors are geared towards empowering learners for their better future.

For "future" section, the following aspects are stated:
a) I would love to see the advancement of technology towards gaming industry.
b) The progress of e-sports industry inline with the gaming industry inside and outside of Malaysia.
c) The structure of the future curriculum design that prepares student to be a critical entrepreneur with life-long learning values.

On leaving a legacy behind, my "past" that I wanted to share focused on how I believed my formal study days served for me to firstly find my field of studies (from biology, to physics, lastly computer science and maths), as well as how the my interest in teaching others shaped in making educator (lecturer) as my profession of choice.

The highlights of my "present" centers around my belief that changed from simply transmitting knowledge for the sake of learner achievement in written examination towards the strive for social reforming. I would go extra miles of improving the delivery of content knowledge in equipping our students for the challenges of the 21st century.

Finally, my "future" spells my personal desire in the future. Gaming industry has always been my hobby since I was at the age of 7 years old. In the latter days, I got super hooked in e-sports that I spent most of my times in following the scene as well as involved in many club activities and community service in this arena. For teaching and learning, I would definitely want to see how tomorrow will unfold for curriculum design that progresses day after day to suit the needs of future graduates.

In the class, the instructor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fitri asked us, the learner to use lego blocks to conceptualize teaching and learning.

I took all blocks and divide them into three groups (left, middle and right) and used up all of them to build a vehicle like structure to symbolize that all domains of cognitive, affective and psychomotor are important and must be achieved in learning outcomes to become a holistic graduate.

The vehicle built means that the teaching and learning of university teaching is like a journey of life, where for me, one will truly find his real passion, understand his own motivation and enthusiast in carving the way towards his goals or ambitions.
