After attending both Columbia and Harvard University at the age of 16 (Brightbill), Auslander finally graduated in 1917, later returning in 1919 to teach English. By 1929, Auslander had left Harvard to lecture poetry at Columbia, where he taught until 1937 (Brightbill). In 1937, Auslander became the first Poet Laureate Consultant in English Poetry for the Library of Congress (Armenti), as well as the poetry editor for the North American Review, all the way to 1941. In 1925, Auslander had published his first collection of poetry, "Sunrise Trumpets", and later on went to publish more, such as "Cyclops' Eye", "No Traveler Returns", and " More than Bread" (Britannica). Auslander supported the sale of US war bonds in World War II, and many of his poems were used because he often wrote  about war.
 In 1933 Auslander married Audrey Wurdemann, a Pulitzer Prize - winning poet (Brightbill), and had a son, Lois, and a daughter, Mary. To support the sale of U.S. War bonds, Auslander worked with his wife to write "The Unconquerables" in 1943, as a collection of poems for Nazi- occupied Europe, which became his best known work (Armenti). Auslander and his wife had also worked on two novels, Islanders and My Uncle Jan (Brightbill).
           In 1964, Auslander was awarded the Robert Frost Prize for his poetry, but unfortunately died shortly after due to a heart attack in Florida, on June 22, 1955 at the age of 67 (Brightbill).

-Imagery in the first three lines, sets the scene of how isolated and distant he is from home. It portrays the speaker as being by himself and connects to the theme of a lonesome journey. This relates to the theme of a journey being a personal experience. 

-The metaphor in line 3, "an anchoring of many ships," shows how night puts a stop to all work and is, for most, a time of rest. Just as the ships are being "anchored" by night, the people of the area are also in rest and stopping until morning. Shows contrast between night and the speaker, as nighttime is slowing and stopping everything, the speaker continues to travel and work against night, connects to the personification of night in line 11.

-Personification of the night in line 10, "feel the night lean cool against my face," makes him feel as if he isn’t alone on his journey.

-Personification line 11, the “sentinel of space” is challenging him because night is supposed to stop all progress.

Written in 1922, part of Modernism, specifically High Modernism of the 1920’s. This period was marked by breaking traditional boundaries between the audience and the poet, and the growing popularity of literature written against hierarchy, and self realization and consciousness. It is considered the golden age of modernist literature because of the rise in popularity of many writers and the changing of Western art forms.
