The things that make the Champs a success is that 100 schools come together to battle it out to be king or queen. The Champs is a success because it costs them £174,000 which is mainly paid by sponsors which these sponsors attend every year to be involved and spectate this event. The Event has over 30,000 spectators and is broadcasted on TV where 1.2 million viewers are watching. Even Usain Bolt goes to see the youngsters compete and also their are scouts there to pick out good runners/ athletes to grow in to huge success' for the Olympics as second tier athletes. There are over 3,500 children that compete each year. There are also shoe companies and university coaches ready to scout for new faces of each business and uni.

Why don't we have something similar in the UK?

We don't have this certain event in the UK, the highest we go is having school games where a number of schools come together in the same area or their are events where schools will compete but not all schools are involved. Sometimes the number could be at 20 schools and not have many spectators showing it isn't really a big thing over here. Another reason is that school competitions struggle for the finance to be able to get the venue or the transport to get there. Another reason is that athletics isn't really a National Sport for our country and isn't really a huge success as we don't really tend to do well at track events. This is because our main National Sports are Football, Rugby and Cricket.

There is a stereotype that black people are genetically programmed to be good sprinters- What does this event tell us about that stereotype?

The event The Champs tells us about the stereotypes in Jamaica this is because every school, age and gender compete to gain the tittle of 'King' or 'Queen'. This type of stereotype leads to all ages and genders wanting to prove that they are the best. Also as this stereotype is world wide, the Jamaicans have such a mind set where they want to win and improve. This is mainly because the event is shown on TV, Sponsors, Broadcasts and Scouts. This type of stereotype makes the world wonder if they all are the best at running and whether they can actually be good sprinters and whether they are able to hold this certain stereotype. This event explains and shows the world that the black ethnicity is able to prove this by the event being so large and that there are a lot of viewers at 1.2 million and spectators at 30,000.

The champs is based in Jamaica and the event aims to deter who is going to be the new and refined Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser and find the upcoming talent early and get these young people trained up properly by scouts who are at the event year on year. The champs is seen to the Jamaicans as equally important as other major events such as the Olympics, this just stresses and emphasise's how important this event is to the country and how seriously it is taken. Those participating within the event will train nearly all year round to star in the event. The event is also open to people of all ages.

How much of Jamaican's sprinting is about genetics and how much is about the environment?

I think that the excellent abilities are due to the nurture and environment of the sport. Athletics has always been a huge thing in the country and in the case study the country "Eat, Sleep and Breathes" the sport which supports this suggesting that all the time that these athletes have go into training for athletics. Also, the event has been running for over 100 years - this suggests that the ability is due to the amount of time and careful consideration is put into the sport and how much training is put into it. However, it could be argued that it is due to genetics because of the 100 years of the event running and the same families keep coming up and doing well within the sport and this could then bring up the idea that this has therefore made today's athletes excel and not because of their hard work and dedication.

How can stereotypes like the one above be broken and who should do what to help this?

Firstly, a stereotype is an opinion of a person or a group of people that regularly belittles them or looks down on them. These stereotypes can be broken by various different groups of people including NGBs, Media and Sponsors. The NGBSs in the sport can do this very easily by broadcasting and supporting those who are stereotyped and set back these unfair remarks. The media can help overcome this as they tend to have the biggest audience and can reach out to so many more people, they can express that these stereotypes aren't fair and not right. Finally, sponsors can add onto ads about stereotypes on a banner across the add to draw attention to the subject and get stereotyping overcome.

How does the Champs affect the psychology of the Jamaicans?

The champs will have a big impact on the psychology of the athletes as it will mentally prepare them and provide them with a complete different mindset and focus to other athletes as they are psychologically prepared for the events due to being in similar events beforehand and competing so seriously. This can potentially provide them with the idea that they are going to do well which therefore suggests that they have a positive psychological stance.
