This movie is about a seventy-eight year old man named Carl Fredricksen. Carl and his wife, Ellie, and him have this plan to go on an adventure and live in a new place for the rest of their life. This future plan would take them to a cliff on Paradise Falls. However, as they grow older, this plan falls when Ellie becomes very ill. Sadly, she passes away leaving just Carl on his own. Carl is forced to leave his home and move into a retirement facility. This is when Carl decides to fill his house up with many balloons where he can fly his way up to Paradise Falls where Ellie and him had always planned on going.

As the house starts to float away, a young boy named Russell becomes trapped with Carl and his house filled with thousands of balloons. The young boy, Russell, is in search for acquiring his final merit badge for helping the elderly. This adventure now consists of the two of them attempting to land safely in Paradise Falls. They eventually land on a cliff that happens to be right next to the falls where Carl can now achieve his goal and plans that he originally had with Ellie. Russell ends up getting his merit badge towards the end of the film and they were both happy and successful after a long journey.

Maintaining identity is a problem that many older adults face within their lives as they grow older. In this movie, Carl lost his wife Ellie due to illness and he goes on this wild adventure that allows for him to find himself after losing his wife. Carl wanted to avoid physical confinement that old age can bring that was seen in Shady Oaks retirement community. The journey that Russell and Carl went on helped Carl recognize that loss and age doesn't mean it's your end, but something to move past and grow on. This is something that Carl had to experience and put in the effort in order for him to carry on with life. Russell and Carl's friendship helped initiate something amazing that they can both learn from through responsibilities and the love of adventures that nature helped provide for them.

Relationship between Carl and Ellie

Carl and Ellie had a romantic relationship as well as a fun spontaneous friendship that they both shared. This is because they both grew up as friends and this initiated a more serious relationship where they eventually got married and everything progressed. They went on many adventures and stayed active as much as possible. Carl and Ellie were both very caring individuals. Even after Ellie's death, Carl still wanted to make Ellie happy by keeping his promise of moving to Paradise Falls. They both adored each other as they grew older and started forming wrinkles and gray hair. This marriage was very positive and they both helped each other grow as individuals such as maintaining their mental and physical health. Their relationship was very stable and healthy which benefited their quality of life.

Relationship between Carl and Russell

In the beginning of their relationship, Carl wanted nothing to do with Russell. This relationship took time to develop into an intergenerational friendship. Throughout their friendship, they both taught each other responsibility and caring for nature. Communication and teamwork was something that they had to establish in order to successfully accomplish their goals of landing in Paradise Falls and obtaining Russell's merit badge.

This friendship helped show how age and agism are concepts that are capable of evolving by living life in the present, rather than dwelling on the past. Carl conquered his fear of becoming old and it wouldn't have been possible if Russell wasn't there to help support him throughout their journey. Carl needed a friend at the time because he was isolating himself from everyone around him and was going down a bad path. Therefore, this friendship helped save a lost soul that was in need of help.

Loss and Grief

In this movie, Carl mourns the loss of his wife Ellie. The loss of a lifelong partner can impact you emotionally as well as make you depressed. This impacts your daily life such as losing interest in activities that you used to love pursuing. House chores and personal hygiene may become less significant because of the lack of motivation. Carl experiences all of the above. He became very depressed, and a couple years later he started giving up on maintaining his house and pursuing his lifelong dream of living on the cliff.

This concept of loss and grief relates back to this unit because everyone reacts differently to death. Carl seemed to have shut down people for a long period of time because he saw no positivity that would magically change his life. He was stuck in the stage of anger and aggression. This stage of grief is recognized as anger in which individuals refuse to accept and move forward with life. Carl stopped socializing after he lost Ellie, as well as gave up on maintaining his house. Unfortunately, Carl was trapped in a state of anger for quite a long time.

Throughout this movie, loss and grief are accurately portrayed. The loss of Ellie impacted Carl and responded with grief and anger. His stages of grief took place for several years which is something that can happen to any of us. Everyone reacts differently to death and there isn't a correct way to respond whether you show anger or acceptance. Everyone is unique and coping mechanisms are all different for each individual. I

believe that Carl accurately portrayed loss and grief because there is no other way to put death. It is something that is considered so unnatural within our society.

In this movie I believe that the concept of relationships was accurately portrayed. This movie indicated how relationships come in all forms, no matter how young or old you may be or even if you’re an animal. These friendships demonstrate how individuals are capable of living a healthy, supportive, and

satisfied life. The happiness and caring relationship between Carl and Ellie is clearly portrayed in this film. The relationship between Carl and Russell shows that with teamwork and communication you are capable of accomplishing your goals. This friendship was definitely accurate because it changes Carl's appearance. In the beginning of the movie Carl was a slow-moving old man. Meanwhile, on his adventure with Russell and the flying house, Carl began to change his lifestyle by changing his clothing to a more fitting and younger look. He demonstrated that old age can be defeated with the help of Russell and taking back his identity.

My favorite scene of the movie, Up, is when Carl meets Russell. I think this scene is quite comical because Russell repeats himself many times and you can see the agitation in Carl's face as well as his responses. However, this movie displays moments where Carl and Russell develop a connection that is hard to express. The humor in this scene stood out to me because it shows the start of their relationship. I love the dry sense of humor they portrayed.

Physical development within this movie was definitely something that can be recognized throughout Carl and Ellie. Both of these individuals are seen at all stages of life where they grew up and become old. This movie portrays smoother skin when they were in their teenage years whereas when they grew older their skin looked more wrinkly and their hair turned gray. You can also witness a walker that Carl uses indicating that he is older and his bones are more fragile. He tends to act slowly, such as his reflexes and engagement in all types of activities. Once Ellie got sick, her illness caused her to be in bed all the time which indicates that as we age you may be bed ridden due to diseases and illness conditions.
