You need to have a kit put together with goggles, flashlight with extra batteries, and some kind of medical kit that you can just grab on your way out if you need to leave in a hurry. You also need to plan out an escape route so that you still have a plan if you need to leave unexpectedly. For example, if the newscasters didn't suggest evacuating, but it got worse than they thought. When you go outside, wear googles or safety glasses, wear long sleeved shirts and pants, and cover your mouth and nose with some type of cloth to prevent breathing in the ash and debris in the air. You need to watch out for falling rocks and debris when you go outside. If it looks like, or is getting dangerously close to your house, leave immediately. Do not try to drive in heavy ash fall unless you absolutely have to.
