The Unites States of America was one of the last countries in which slavery was made illegal.
The slavery was one of the biggest reasons why the civil war began. The northern states were not supporters of slavery and thought it to be a violation of human rights whereas the southern states were making a lot of money on slavery and therefore they did not want to make slavery illegal.
One of the most infamous places for slavery was Jamestown, Virginia. Here, the slaves would pick cotton and do other labour without getting something back from their "masters".
