1. “Worldwide, 795 million people suffer from chronic hunger, 11 children under age 5 die every minute and 33 mothers die every hour…In developed countries 160 million people are functionally illiterate,” (Jahan, 2015, p.4). 

2. Over the past 50 years $2.3 trillion has been given in foreign aid (Easterly & Pfutze, 2008). 

3. While progress is being made towards global human development goals, the statistics for extreme poverty are overwhelming. For the past 50 years charitable giving has been characterized by relief efforts, but true change and development have not been seen despite the many years and dollars.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the world saw an increase in aid spending while the international poverty levels remained the same or declined (Arimah, 2004, p.399-400). 

2. Most aid programs focus on sanitation, shelter, and water, but rarely look at providing for a sustainable livelihood for the people, which would provide for their wellbeing after the aid is gone. 

3.By educating organizations on the impact that changing their methodology of giving to a more sustainable and communal approach, there will be a much greater impact in poverty alleviation. 

4. The mentality  of the aid organization needs to be that of partnership and service to the aid beneficiary, looking to them for the answers, rather than asserting a cookie-cutter aid program used worldwide. The most critical change in thinking begins and must always be that of asking the right questions, rather than coming with all the right answers (Hjorth, 2003). 

5. There has been a substantial amount of research in regard to effective and ineffective foreign aid practices, but little is being done to encourage organizations and donors to implement the research findings.
