On January 9, 1978, he became the city's first openly gay officer, as well as one of the first openly gay individuals to be elected to office in the United States. He openly campaigned for gay rights and that gave the community hope and made others upset. Milk was assassinated and his community was hurt but inspired the San Fransico community to have such an open gay community that was stronger than ever before.
