Mirrors are often associated with beauty, looks, and personal image. At times, one notices their well-brushed hair or their matching outfit. But on most occasions, mirrors are used for us to notice and pick at flaws or even insecurities. In the chapter “Rice Husband,” Lena St. Clair’s mother can predict events. Unfortunately, she is only able to predict bad things like her husband’s death or her dead baby. In talking about her mother, Lena says, “She can see all this. And it annoys me that all she sees are the bad parts…. She knows what’s going to happen to us” (Tan 164). There is an association between Lena’s mother’s ability to only predict evil and mirrors. Mirrors point out flaws and insecurities, all “evil” things, similar to Lena’s mother’s evil predictions. Both situations emphasize negative things, leading to individuals focusing on them and overlooking the good, like pretty eyes or a happy marriage.

Lena St. Clair’s marriage to Harold mirrors the prelude because the mothers are able to see what will happen to their daughters’ marriages. In American Translation, the mother has premonitions about her daughter’s relationship. Lena’s mother was able to predict the marriage because she didn’t finish her food, “”My mother had looked in my rice bowl and told me I would marry a bad man” (Tan 164). Like the daughter in American translation, who saw “her own reflection looking back at her” (Tan 159) Lena chooses to ignore the predictions, the daughters unable to properly see the future.

The symbol of a mirror is associated with the relationship between Waverly and Lindo Jong, showing a sort of reflection on the ties between mother and daughter, illustrating the perspective of reflecting on one’s self and another’s life. When showing a present bought by her fiancée, Waverly and Lindo get into a little scuffle about the state of their relationship and Waverly’s relationship with her fiancée. Waverly, contemplating her mother’s actions, states, “And looking at the coat in the mirror, I couldn’t fend off the strength of her will anymore, her ability to make me see black where there was once white, white where there was once black. The coat looked shabby, an imitation of romance” (Tan 169). Though experiencing a strain in their relationship, Waverly and Lindo still hold a familial connection with each other, a natural worry for the well-being of each other. Like Waverly says, she ‘couldn’t fend off the strength of her will anymore’. Lindo criticizing Waverly connects with a mirror, both literally and figuratively, as Waverly starts to reflect upon her current situation with her fiancée. A mirror is a clear representation on the state of reflection, especially of the self, and the contemplation that Waverly has, staring at the coat, ‘white where there was once black’ and ‘white where there was once black’, can be interpreted as a reflection on how Waverly and Lindo show similar care for each other, to see through each other’s eyes, to help search for the ‘blacks’ and ‘whites’ in their relationships with others and themselves.

In her novel, The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan uses the symbol of a mirror to portray Ying-Ying St. Clair’s influence on her daughter Lena regarding relationships with their significant others. Growing up, Lena’s parents were constantly disconnected due to a language barrier, as her “mother would speak in Chinese, saying things my father could not possibly imagine. I could understand the words perfectly, but not the meanings. One thought led to another without connection” (Tan 109). Later in the story after Lena grows up and gets married, she continues to have these same kinds of disconnections with her husband, Herald. During a disagreementshe realizes that she doesn’t “know what the point of this argument is…None of it seems right. Nothing makes sense” (Tan 164). The strain of her parent’s relationship is mirrored in her relationship with Herald, as neither of them can properly communicate with the other.

The theme of “mirrors” is presented through Waverly and Rich’s relationship in “Four Directions.” Waverly’s mother, Lindo Jong, was very strict and their relationship was strained because of it. She forced her to become a talented chess player without taking Waverly’s feelings into account, in order to give status and an opportunity of fame which she thinks equals happiness due to her bad childhood where she suffered for lacking status and being forced to serve the Huang family. resulting in a deep resentment of her mother. Waverly recalls, “There was one duty I couldn’t avoid. I had to accompany my mother on Saturday market days when I had no tournament to play. My mother would proudly walk with me, visiting many stores, buying very little.” Waverly had shown to have some of her mother’s qualities in her adult life which she sees in her relationship. She thinks, “He saw all the private aspects of me—and I mean not just sexual private parts, but my darker side, my meanness, my pettiness, my self-loathing—all the things I kept hidden.”

The symbol of a mirror resonates with Lena St. Clair due to her confusing relationship with her husband in “Rice Husband.” The control and balance she craves within her relationship is constantly tested, as she proclaims to her husband, “‘Harold I love you.’ And he looked in the rearview mirror, backing up the car, and said, ‘I love you too. Did you lock the door?’ And just like that, I started to think, it’s just not enough” (Tan 174). Through the rearview mirror, Lena’s relationship with her husband seems perfect and happy, however “it’s just not good enough” shows her internal and unspoken feelings of their relationship not being as good as it seems. She has a desire for her and her husband to have an equal and balanced relationship. Through this, she gets lost and confuses fairness and equality in a relationship, and ultimately her relationship is constantly tethered between control and who it lies with.

In the chapter "Without Wood", after separating from her husband Ted, Rose Hsu Jordan reflects very differently on herself and their past relationship. Initially, Ted acts as the decision-maker, while Rose is completely passive in their relationship. After a failed surgery at his hands results in a lawsuit, Ted loses all confidence in himself and forces his wife to make all the decisions, a transition that is quite jarring for her. Due to her lack of strong opinion, she has viewed the world and herself through Ted’s eyes. Her friend Lena comments on how she was “‘depressed’” and “‘manipulated’” by Ted, something Rose did not see while they were together, even though she now realizes she doesn’t miss him “at all” (210). In Ted’s absence, Rose is able to be herself without anybody swaying her opinion or changing the lens in which she views the world. When she tells Ted she will be staying in their house and sees “his eyes, confused, then scared”, she revels in “the power of [her] words”, revealing how she now sees herself as someone able to influence and make decisions, and she likes it (218). She has been given a new mirror to see herself through, now unwarped by her 15-year long unhealthy marriage.

In the prelude "American Translation" the symbolism of the mirror represents the importance of self-awareness and self-determination. During her argument with Ted, Rose Hsu Jordan reflects on the power dynamic of their relationship. She rejects his divorce settlement to keep her relationship alive and says "You can't just pull me out of your life and throw me away" (Tan 196). She fights for her marriage and sees the importance of her opinion and choice of words. She looks into the future and sees the value in her relationship, causing her to stay in her marriage with Ted.

In the chapter “Four Directions” of The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, Waverly is frightened of the idea that her mother’s thoughts about Rich will influence her opinion about and love for him, tying into the theme of mirrors and perceptions. Waverly is “worried…Because [she] knew my feelings for [Rich] were vulnerable to being felled by my mother’s suspicions, passing remarks, and innuendos” (Tan 193). Waverly knows that her feelings for Rich are “vulnerable” to her mother’s criticism of him, suggesting that her opinions often reflect those of her mother whether she wants that or not. This is the case because a similar thing happened when Waverly’s mother expressed her negative opinions of Waverly’s first husband, and Waverly found herself sharing those opinions. Now, with her second husband, Rich, she is “afraid that some unseen speck of truth would fly into [her] eye, blur what I was seeing, and transform him” into someone with “tiresome habits and irritating imperfections” (Tan 191), as in her first marriage. Waverly’s feelings towards Rich are that of a person who is blinded to “imperfections” by love, and overlooks them to see his whole person. However, Waverly mentions “truth,” what she is “seeing,” and her perception of her husband versus her mother’s. These words relate to sight and perception and the way that we see ourselves and others, connecting to her experience of unwillingly adapting her beliefs to match her mother’s, suggesting that she often reflects her mothers opinions and experiences the distorted perception that mirrors may provide.

In the chapter "Without Wood" in Amy Tan's "Joy Luck Club", the symbol of a mirror appears through the different perceptions of Rose between her and her mother, as An-Mei sees more within her daughter as Rose deals with a lack of self-confidence. When Rose is given with divorce papers from her husband Ted, he tells her that he wants the house, and uses her silence to his advantage to abuse power. After sitting in her room silent for days, her mother calls her to check in, advising her to stand up for herself. This pep-talk inspires Rose to finally come out of her shell and refuse demands from Ted, and she finally understands that "[My] mother knows what is inside [me]” (Tan 188). The mom sees deeper within Rose and believed in the strength that Rose couldn't see for herself. As if looking through a mirror, An-Mei sees a different perception of Rose than she sees of herself, and Rose is eventually able to embrace her mom's visions in her.

Amy Tan's theme of mirrors is emphasized by Lindo, who expresses her love for Waverly through constant nagging of her appearance and life choices, and her mirror-image, Waverly, who hides her distaste with the fact that her mother is frequently right with half-hearted satisfaction. As Lindo criticizes Rich's gift of a coat, Waverly yells, "how can you criticize a gift?", yet later realizes that Lindo was right, that "the coat looked shabby, an imitation of romance" (Tan 169).

Later, however, Waverly realizes that her mother doesn't criticize her and her life choices out of contempt, but rather out of love. Lindo expresses surprise at the fact that Waverly is convinced that her mother hates her boyfriend, and Waverly soon comes to a realization: "I saw what I had been fighting for: it was for me" (Tan 183). In the end, Waverly realizes that her mother has been selfless in her love and that she herself has been selfish in her deep hatred for her mother, ultimately embodying the mirror reverse of her mother's love.

In the chapter “Rice Husband”, Amy Tan utilizes the symbol of a mirror to embody Lena St. Clair’s internal conflicts and reflections towards her relationship with her husband. After showing Ying-Ying the new house they bought together, all Lena can think about is what her mom is thinking. She says to herself, “...it annoys me that all she sees are the bad parts. But then I look around and everything she said is true…between me and Harold”(Tan 164). The mirror in this story is characterized through Lena’s struggles to look past the moments she is in and can only see where she is now. It is understood that Lena has this difficulty of being able to voice her needs and desires to her husband because of her reflection of her past with her mother that would never communicate her problems properly.
