"The pandemic is also hitting low-income communities particularly hard. Since New York City began releasing COVID-19 data by zip code, the economic divide is stark: zip codes in the bottom quartile of average incomes comprise 36% of COVID-19 cases compared to less than 10% for the wealthiest quartile" (Oxford Academic).

Covid-19 disproportionally affecting those of lower economic status was not surprising me. Many wealthier neighborhoods have easier access to health care including clinics readily available and perhaps better insurance policies to access the treatment they need.

On the other hand, those of lower economic status may not be insured for one, thus preventing them from accessing equitable health care. Additionally, they might not have easy access to clinics and have to travel farther out in order to receive care. Sanitary conditions might not be as clean as wealthier neighborhoods additionally the ability to socially distance might not be as feasible due to a multi-generational household.

Latinx

"Twenty-five percent of the deaths from coronavirus have been Latinos, in spite of the fact that Latinos are 18% of the population." (CNN)

Many of the Latinx population is essential workers such as in grocery stores to provide food meaning that they were more exposed to the Coronavirus than non-essential workers who could work from home and practice social conditioning.

Not only are the jobs the reasons, but also many of the Latins population don't have health care coverage and thus were even more disproportionally affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

African Americans
"While Black Americans comprise less than half the population in states such as Louisiana, Michigan, and Illinois, they comprise as many as 70% of COVID-19-related deaths in those regions" (Academic).

"Less than one fifth of Black Americans are able to work from home compared to nearly 30% of non-Latino Whites. Black Americans are also more likely to work in essential service work (e.g., food, delivery, transportation)" (Academic).

Clearly African Americans are put into positions that put them at higher risk for Covid-19 revealing structural racism built into our health care system that places African Americans and other minorities at greater risk.

Vaccines
Many African Americans, Latinx, and other minority groups are also less likely to be vaccinated than other racial groups.

I remember during the pandemic and after reading the articles, reminded of how essential workers were deeply affected by the Coronavirus. Low-wage workers, especially, had to always be on the front lines and thus be exposed to Covid and some may not even have access to sick leave. Not only are they mentally distraught by the conditions they have to experience in hospitals but they were also at higher risk of catching Covid. I remember thinking of how unfortunate it was that the structures of our societies severely placed pressure on essential workers in a time when they should've been the most supported.

Often seen as the "model minority" it is easy for many to forget that Asian Americans are also a marginalized community. During the Covid-19 pandemic, underlying racism was also revealed with hate crimes against the AAPI community prevalent. Additionally, the AAPI community itself is very diverse and there are differing levels of disparity within each group so it can be hardly to truly quantify the Asian experience in health care.

"Approximately two million Asian Americans—a higher proportion than their share of the US population—are putting themselves at risk as frontline and essential workers" (Mckinsey).
