I believe this represents part three of A Thousand Splendid Suns because of the relationships that Laila and Mariam gain. They gain a relationship with each other built on trust and both have a bond with Laila's daughter Aziza. In the end, Mariam dies for Laila and her two children after she kills Rasheed for almost killing Laila. The poem is of defending for love, and dying for those in your heart and that's exactly what Mariam does for her small family she never thought she'd have.
