This section of this song I think helps us kind of understand that she doesn't know where she stands with her father, with her newlywed husband and the death of her mother.

This painting spoke to me because I always see this painting relating to Mariam in many ways like at the start of the book Mariam idealizes her father (shown in gold) and she always sees her mother as the bad guy for telling her the truth. And then as Mariam moves into her fathers house the golden person in the painting then becomes her mom because she realizes her mom was correct about her father all along, Mariam is also like this when her father arranges the marriage for her. Also in Mariam's marriage she sees her past as the best thing and then she sees her husband as the bad guy.

I think that the painting, Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth represents the second part of A Thousand Splendid Suns, or Laila's first part. The painting itself is about the conquest of life, as Wyeth stated. This represent Laila a lot the closer you get to the third part of the book when rumors begin about her and Tariq and the way her parents died.

And we see that during the end of Part Two Laila's house is blown up as her and her mother and father are about to leave so this song shows how Laila misses all of her friends and how there lives all took a turn for the worst.

This painting describes in section 2 on how Laila and Tariq had to part way. Laila constantly daydreams about Tariq and the last moments they spent together. Laila cherishes their bond so much because that was her childhood best friend and eventually they fall in love with one another. So this painting shows that loss and how alone she feels when they are apart.

This is a 19th century painting that demonstrates arranged marriage. At 15, Mariam is forced into an arranged marriage to a middle aged widower by her father. In this arranged marriage, she is abused, verbally and physically. At first, it was small things, like calling her a harami. But, it eventually led to being forced to eat rocks.

That's My Heart Right There by Willie Perdomo

We used to say,

That’s my heart right there.

As if to say,

Don’t mess with her right there.

As if, don’t even play,

That’s a part of me right there.

In other words, okay okay,

That’s the start of me right there.

As if, come that day,

That’s the end of me right there.

As if, push come to shove,

I would fend for her right there.

As if, come what may,

I would lie for her right there.

As if, come love to pay,

I would die for that right there.

I believe this represents part three of A Thousand Splendid Suns because of the relationships that Laila and Mariam gain. They gain a relationship with each other built on trust and both have a bond with Laila's daughter Aziza. In the end, Mariam dies for Laila and her two children after she kills Rasheed for almost killing Laila. The poem is of defending for love, and dying for those in your heart and that's exactly what Mariam does for her small family she never thought she'd have.

This link will take you to poems about abuse to women in Afghanistan. In this novel there is a lot of abuse in marriages. Mariam and Laila both experience the abuse of Rasheed. They experienced emotional, physical, verbal, and also sexual abuse. Laila is forced into a polygamous marriage with Mariam.

The article talks about how also having multiple wives is satisfying sexually which is true from A Thousand Splendid Suns because Rasheed and Laila after they get married are more sexually active than Rasheed and Mariam in order to hide that Laila is pregnant.
