This is a sweet book about a girl who moves to America from South Korea. She is embarrassed about having a name no one can pronounce, so the class makes a name jar. It's a great story about understanding how even something like a name can cause anxiety and how making an effort to pronounce someone's name can make a big difference.

My love for this book came from students getting mad because the speech therapist took 3 specific children three times a week and she was faithful. The students didn’t understand why they couldn’t go so they were upset. This book Fair is Fair by Sunny Varela is a story about 3 zoo animals who discover they all have needs. Fairness doesn’t mean getting the same. Fair is getting what you need, not what you want.

This book is about a little boy on a football team. The little boy is smaller than the other boys so he sits on the beach. Mo's team is loosing and the coach decides to put him in. The other team laughs because he is so small and will not be able to catch the ball. Mo's coach tricks the other team by having Mo run down the field. The other players do not run after him because Mo's teammates do not throw the ball to him. On the third try, Mo's coach tells the players to throw the ball to Mo because the other team will not think it will happen. Mo catches the ball and his team wins the game. I love this because it show that no matter your size you can accomplish anything.

This book teaches students about the disturbing water conditions in South Sedan, Africa. The book is partly based on the true story of a boy named Salva Dut who was separated from his family during civil war in South Sedan and leads about 1,500 other lost boys to a refugee camp over time.
The other part of the story is fictional about a young village girl named Nya whose job is to fetch water twice a day for her family since they live so far away from water. She walks two hours each way for a total of eight hours a day to get water from unsafe water holes, but that is all the water they had. Sickness prevails among so many from the contaminated water.
By the end of the story the two characters meet. Salva ends up in New York and wants to get safe drinking water to South Sedan. With help, a well is built in her village and so is a school. The local people are taught to take care of the well and keep it in good repair so that all can have fresh drinking water.
After our 5th graders read this story, they walk on the track with jugs of water in their arms, to get a little feel for what Nya did daily.
(Joanna Dill)

Every time Maya tries to join Chloe and her friends, they reject her. Eventually Maya stops coming to school. When Chloe's teacher gives a lesson about how even small acts of kindness can change the world, Chloe is stung by the lost opportunity for friendship, and thinks about how much better it could have been if she'd shown a little kindness toward Maya.

I love to use this book in the middle of the year as a reminder to be kind to others. This is especially important in the middle of the year because students have become comfortable with each other and aren't always kind in every situation.

(Chelsea Ganske)

This is a cute book that helps kids deal with big feelings like disappointment and worrying about things that we can't control. Most kids can relate to a birthday party or situation that did not go as they wanted. Many of my students with SEL difficulties have a hard time thinking about things that they can control and things that they can't control. This is a good book to open up a discussion about those things.

Those Shoes
This book is about a boy who wants to fit in by having the same kind of shoes that "everyone" else has. He lives with his grandmother so they don't have very much money. He is wearing "baby" shoes that the teacher/counselor gave him and is embarrassed. He does finally get a pair of the shoes but he gets them at a thrift store and they are too small but he wants them so badly he suffers for a few days. He then decides to give them to a friend "anonymously" because he notices his shoes are held together with tape that is coming off. I think this book show kindness and empathy, struggle to fit in, struggle to have what others have/want what others , kindness between teacher/counselor and student, grandparent to child, and child to child. It also shows a lot of empathy!!
