The COVID-19 Mental Health Project aims to address mental health needs both during and post the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure healing and rehabilitation.

We began this project as a way to support COVID-19 workers, in light of the dire circumstances under which they were working to save lives and support our communities. There was an immense feeling of helplessness, compassion fatigue, burnout, and guilt among us. This is where the idea of providing direct support services to COVID workers arose from with a hope to be able to reach other target groups as well.

Over time, we have opened up services to everyone because whether it has created new challenges or aggravated older ones, this pandemic has affected each of us in some way or the other. Currently, our public health infrastructure is not designed to meet our mental health-care needs. Now more than ever, we need to support the mental health of our people.

(3) Sharing Circles- open, closed, and liberation circles

Our Sharing Circles are safe and confidential spaces for people to share, listen, process, and work through their emotions and experiences together, in a group space.

Open Sharing Circles are one-off, drop-in spaces which have a different theme for every session. You can choose to drop in depending on the theme for that week, and it’s likely there would be a different group of people in different sessions, depending on the theme. These spaces will run for 1 hour and 15 minutes, and take place on a fortnightly basis.

Our Closed Circles are spaces where the same group of people meet regularly for 4 sessions to share, listen, and work through emotions pertaining to one specific specific theme, and support each other during this process.

While a Sharing Circle is facilitated by qualified Mental Health Professionals; we also have Liberation Circles that are facilitated by those with lived experience with certain issues. At One Future Collective, we believe in peer support, and our Liberations Circles are community-led spaces rooted in the shared lived experiences of people so they can support one another.

In light of the social isolation and sense of ennui that people have been experiencing during this pandemic, we also have Community Spaces to foster creativity and feelings of belonging. Unlike our Sharing Circles, the Community Spaces are oriented around doing fun recreational activities together for rest, care, and connection.

They take place across a range of modalities, for example: dance, movement, yoga etc

(5) Mental health and the Pandemic- Workshop Series

Over the past few months, we have been realizing that people are experiencing Zoom Fatigue and, oftentimes, very active sharing spaces can become tiring for them. We also notice people asking for resources in our community groups.

Keeping this in mind, we are holding this workshop series for information dissemination and skill-building for self- and community care. During these spaces, we may also have some interactive activities to encourage folks to explore the skills in the shared space. This makes our Workshops a blend of information-sharing, resource-building, and interactive participation.
