1) Stalin made sure that peasants gave up their farmland and did not have anything for themselves. With this new land and farming tools from the peasants he created a central government run farm called collectives. (By Gemma)
2) The Great Purge that was focused on getting rid of anyone who threatened Stalin’s power. (By Julia)
3) The government controlled all of education. Children learned about Communism and how “amazing” it was. Teachers who taught things that the government did not approve of lost their jobs or were imprisoned. Children were taught that sacrifice and hard work will help the communist state. Children were trained to be communist members at youth groups, supported by the state. (By: Julia)
4) Because of the Holodomer places were stripped that did not have enough grain. This caused peasants to starve. (By: Julia)
5) Train tickets were not sold in addition so that peasants could not leave the area. (By: Gemma)
6) Many villages died as a result of Stalin's actions (By: Gemma)
7) Sources vary from 3.3 million to over 6 million who died as a direct result of the famine. These figures do not include several million who were killed outright or sent to the gulag prison camps.

1) Secret police to arrest and excecute “traitors.” (By Julia)
2) Stalin thought that the Soviet Union was “falling behind” in society and government so he set up the Five-Year Plans. These plans helped with creating a higher production and better running government (By Gemma)
3) Controlled newspapers and radios. Media that did not agree with the stars were censored or the artists were put in prison. Government used media to show only their achievements, to make people think the government is doing well. (By Julia)
4) Government controlled education. Children learned about the virtues of Communism. Teachers were fired or arrested if they taught things that the government did not want them to.

I thought this cartoon represented Stalin because on the left hand of the photo it shows what Stalin actually was like, the sufferings, and war. But on the right side it shows what the public sees and how nice he looks on the outside.

I looked at the bottom right corner and saw the boys face with the smirk and thought that he looked scared. I thought that this cartoon represented Stalin because even though the people are following him they are scared of him.
