Social protection programmes really contributed to reduce the idiosyncratic risks in my childhood and youth life cycles. They were all important, but the most remarkable social programme I recall is PROUNI, the scholarship for poor people to have access to higher education. The Programme was created in 2004 due to the fact that only 1% of the population in Brazil had higher education. That number was even smaller when it comes to afrodescendants and poor people. Therefore, it aims to provide more opportunities for poor people coming from public schools through a national examination. That programme was essential for me to get to where I am today.

Early in my career, my work contract had expired, and I wasn't able to land another job right away. I was, however, eligible to claim unemployment benefits from the state government while I was on the job hunt. This support was calculated based on my previous job's income and was available for only a set number of weeks/half the year--the duration of which prompts you to keep going with the job search. The weekly payments are supposed to help alleviate the burden of rent and other bills plus cover costs of necessities like food and transportation. I also remember being offered career counseling/job hunt aides. It wasn't targeted to my field, but rather focused on getting you some form of income to match your basic set of skills and interests. Luckily, I was able to stay the course with my career goals and eventually found a new job a month and a half later.

Without that, I would have stopped everything at that time. Later, when being in the working life, I could benefit from the coverage of the pregnancy complications and receive a modest income from social insurance to cover my long absence from my work.

Although, it stopped just in the same year for non contributory scheme. I was again registered by the African Initiatives for Relief and Development (AIRD) under the UN-WFP TPM for general food distribution and Nutrition activities in the conflict affected English speaking parts of Cameroon. My NSIF registration was again activated in 2018 and the contributions are not consistent given that we are employed with short term contracts and every time the contracts expire, the contributions stops.
It is important to note that the scheme permits for us to also be registered with insurance for health, child and risks coverage. The scheme is to cover my entire family for any risk associated with my absence from home while working.
ETALI Genesis Akwaji, SUSTAIN Cameroon

I have been a beneficiary of a social health protection scheme from the National Social Insurance Fund (NHIF) in Kenya. This is a public health insurance scheme that is open to formal, informal workers and retirees.

It covers members and their dependants, and is open to older persons who cannot be insured under private health schemes. It is contributory in nature, having different tiers and benefits depending on the type of membership.

Coverage is throughout the lifecycle of the members and their dependants (children to older persons including maternity care) conditional to payment of prescribed premiums. It covers members for consultation, medication and medical procedures (mostly in public hospitals) irrespective of pre-existing conditions such as HIV/AIDS, Cancer and Diabetes.

There are however concerns over issues of adequacy of benefits depending on the types of membership with members from the informal sector advocating for better benefits from the scheme. There is also the issue of complicated pre-approval of specialist consultation and medical procedures during the course of treatment.
