Most tribes. Some still thrive on they old teachings they follow, but the ones who dont want back the land they had before and lost like Calgary is part of native land and lawsuits are taking place to remove the city for them to have the land. These kind of issues are brought up through their corrupt self governance and will continue to to rise if something isnt done to fix it

One of the consequences is that Indigenous peoples' culture will continue to disintegrate and it will eventually be forgotten since these communities are already broken due to colonization and assimilation. Generational trauma is still affecting the younger generation of Indigenous peoples. These communities already had a functioning government that took care of their people and preserve the culture before the colonizers came into the picture. Keeping self-governance is basically just repeating history

I think a potential consequence is retaliation. We are in the year 2021 and I know for a fact most cultures would not accept something like this. The Canadian and American government has taken so much away from Aboriginal peoples, the least they could do is give them a chance to self govern and live freely in the way they want to. There is a possibility that if they don't get to, they will retaliate and protest for their rights.

One of the key building blocks for strengthening and supporting aboriginal governments is promoting and supporting a greater self reliance. Indigenous laws operate a long side with federal and provincial laws, if they took that away from them they would have issues with getting help. Some Indigenous people don't use the money that the government gives them for good things, a lot of them use it for alcohol and drugs. For a country that promotes diversity and acceptance, not restoring self-governance towards Indigenous people says a lot in itself. It truly demonstrates the entitlement and lack of empathy the Canadian government holds towards this minority group and at the end of the day only puts us back further.
Indigenous Self-Governance is important as it allows these people to have greater self-reliance. If this is not restored many nations will have to rely on the Canadian Government, and may continue to further deteriorate Indigenous cultures and their traditions. We'll see many nations slowly lose parts of their identity as they must adapt to how other communities currently are, and soon enough many of these Indigenous communities may assimilate or integrate themselves into a culture completely different from theirs. - Andrei

It'll also gradually give the Canadian government a bad "Rep" to other countries because in todays day and age a lot of movements are internationally advocated and adapted into society. The Canadian government is more than aware that the Indigenous groups were self-governed way before the settlers came to Canada and even after that they tried to be self- governed. The consequences of the Indigenous groups not being self-governed is taking their independence away and in ways taking their past/cultures with that. This makes me think back to residential schools, how Indigenous students were forced to be taken away from their families to be part and change everything about them to be part of the "white culture". They were forced into letting go of their past and their culture to be something/someone who they're not and I do 100%agree that they should be self-governed.

One Potential consequence if Self-Governance is not restored to the Indigenous People is the loss of culture and identity of the Indigenous People. The First People carry much history in their roots and so with that their identity. Their identity being handled and governed by a society that has traumatized them and does not understand them could lead to Indigenous Identity and their history to be lead to an end. This very much affects Canadian History, as they are the first people of Canada and a big impact in the making of Canada and it's history. After all the suffering and trauma they've been through, the least that the government could do is give them their freedom and self govern. Another potential consequence is the fact that how they are being treated and their current problems and situations are being obviously dismissed or ignored by the Canadian government shows the severity of the current Governance of the Indigenous People. Many Indigenous women and kids go missing or are killed at a higher rate than any other race in Canada and America. Though issues like this are never really brought into light because of the poor current governance of the Indigenous People. This does not put a good face on the Canadian Government and how they advertise Canada as an equal and loving country. There are also major issues that arise from the history of trauma that have been put onto the Indigenous people that leave them to lack of identity which leads to lack of hope and are left to live and lead meaningless lives. They need help and with the current government state, they are neither given nor could they really get any help. With their Self Governance being restored it may lead to more good too for the Canadian Government as it takes off some weight off their shoulders, and it gives the Indigenous People back power that were stripped off them. It would give them back a sense of purpose and will, there is not really much bad to them being given Self-Governance. - Trisha

I agree, the Indigenous are troubled because of what happened in the past. The reason that they are facing drugs and alcohol addiction is due to the government not helping them. They are prone to addiction due to what their ancestors and their current generation is experiencing. The children who survived the residential schools experienced sexual and emotional trauma that can be passed down to their children. And it is also not helping that there are people who refused to acknowledge that residential schools were even a thing.

I think indigenous people should have the right to self govern themselves because they were stripped away from their culture, identity and language. they were forced to learn the way to mold themselves into someone they were not and learn a religion they didn't want to follow. if they don't start to self govern, their culture, traditions, and language will keep being thrown to the side and seen as less, everything depends on the Canadian government for them, they have a right to live the way they want and be free. they've been through so much pain and trauma I believe they have every right to self govern.

For thousands of years, Indigenous peoples have established their own system of government until European settlers arrived and took that away.
Therefore, Canada should recognize how important it is for Indigenous peoples to restore their own self-governance. If Indigenous self-governance is not restored, Canada would be considered as a hypocrite and someone who undervalues the rights of a specific minorities.

Oppression, discrimination, and racism. Many around the world are able to relate to these words and many other words that describe our world wide problems . All around the world this factor are seem. in Canada it is more visual when talking about indigenous rights. in America it is more common to see the rights of African american being violated. Given the fact, that we all have felt belittled every human on this earth around the world-black, white, brown, yellow and any kind of color you can think of when relating to human skin color have all undergone pain. The Indigenous will one day fight for theirs.

With indigenous culture still fading and slowly disappearing without self governance there would be no cultural preservation leading to linguistic and cultural extinction.

One potential consequences for Canada if Indigenous Self-Governance is not restored is to lose the chance to relearn many of the culture, beliefs, and languages as the result of residential schools and to right the wrongdoings that happened in the past. Also, Indigenous people knows the best way to deal with issues as they are the ones who keeps suffering from it. -Chesca

I think that if Canada were to not restore Indigenous self-government it would greatly suffer. It would give the impression that the government of Canada doesn't care about it's Indigenous people and would rather control them instead of listening to their issues and what they have to say. It would be hard to call Canada a diverse and free country if it's government refuses to address the people who originally lived there. It would show that the government of Canada is ok with taking away freedoms if that's what they want. - Alex

Taking away self-governance from people that seeks it will lead only to conflicts as the Indigenous peoples are their own and have no need for another group to govern them. Self-governance is important for the Indigenous people it empowers their sense of belonging and will further the maintain their culture and traditions as they would have their own right of education. Preventing any of this will only rush the process of assimilation within the Indigenous communities.
