-Trade barriers can protect domestic business.

This means that less efficient businesses within the

nation are not put out of work by more

efficient foreign businesses and can continue

to strengthen the nations economy.

-Trade barriers can also be used to influence

other nations, or punish them. These trade

barriers are sometimes called sanctions.

Sanctions were put on South Africa around

the time of Nelson Mandela's uprising to try

and end apartheid. Nations such as the United States

and the UK placed sanctions and refused to remove them

until South Africa changed their policies on black africans

and indians.

-Although trade barriers do protect domestic

business, that can cause major

problems in the economy. Without efficient

competition, domestic businesses and markets

keep their prices high, and all of the businesses which

they supply face higher costs of production and

therefore reduced production. And when production is

reduced, people lose their jobs. So even though at a glance

it can seem as if trade barriers increase the jobs within

the nation, the final effect can often be net lost jobs.

-Trade barriers can hurt the average consumer as well.

The primary principle that keeps our capitalist

economy working is competition between businesses.

Competition keeps prices reasonable, as each business

is trying to outsell the other. The result for the consumer

is that prices stay low. When competition is decreased,

businesses that are not efficient enough to produce

enough product instead resort to raising prices.

With no efficient competition, prices stay high.
