The idea of endless inventory as a musical element speak to us listeners in that we tend to gravitate towards one aspect of the piece instead of connecting with work, including the artist performing the piece. "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey is great example of this. A lot of her audience is on love with the things she does with her voice in the songs she makes such as making melodic runs out of nearly every line which basically calls to you as a listener to hear. This is how she was attempting to make her case as a singer. However, what many people forget is that those amazing elements in her songs are all because of her. Another great example is "That's What I Like" by Bruno Mars. Everyone loves the tune and the lyrics of the song as well as the great runs he does at the end of the song, but many don't realize how much he puts into his voice to do that. We all need to learn to appreciate the whole entire piece which includes the performer and the songwriters.

"Everybody's a connoisseur of days. We know that they are all individually different, that they can be compared only with imprecision. We struggle to compound and accumulate the knowledge we have made in days we have already lived; we remember peaks, or tell ourselves that we do, but often forget what is traumatic or unspeakable."
                        - Ratliff, Every Song Ever, Pg. 117

"When we sense that a musician understands music as a process without a fixed outcome, our ears notice two things: that we may not best understand his work in one song, one album, or even one period, and also that he probably believes his work may not be best understood in one song, one album, or even one period."
- Ratliff, Every Song Ever, Pg. 114
