The opening of Chronicle of a Death Foretold begins with a dream Santiago has. This is not his first dream. Please explain one of his dreams and his mother's reaction. You must do so by citing and integrating from the text. Lastly, please try and interpret some part of his dream. Pick out two possible symbols and their meaning. by Vannah Scarborough

Santiago has a dream about trees. His mother, giving her opinion explains: "He was always dreaming about trees"(3). His mother was slightly annoyed by his dreams. I think the tree dream means that his life is about to come to a "shitty" end hence the bird-shit feeling he has when he wakes up.

Santiago has several dreams about flying through a grove of trees. His mother doesn't seem to really take it all too seriously. Actually, when Santiago says that he saw birds, his mother says that birds are a good omen. But he ended up getting murdered the morning that he woke up from that dream. However, my interpretation is that his life is about to come to a crashing halt and he needs to pull the plane up, or change something that he is doing wrong.

Santiago dreams of trees the day before he is murdered. His mother confessed to the narrator that "he was always dreaming about trees" (3). His mother is unconcerned about his dreams, because "any dream about birds means good health" (6). His mother, still bleary from sleep, assumes that there were birds in his dream for a reason we don't know yet. The relevance of his dream is yet unclear, but his vision of flying a tinfoil airplane might become important in the future??

Santiago dreamt of airplanes. His mother said that any dream with birds in it was a good omen. Flying off alone is a symbol of death. The fact that he doesn't feel anything symbolizes that he's a ghost. Santiago "dreamt he was flying above the trees in a tinfoil airplane"(3). The "tinfoil airplane" could be a casket.

Santiago has many dreams. The week before he was murdered, he had a dream that “he was alone in a tinfoil airplane and flying through the almond trees with out bumping into anything” (4). His mother was a well known dream interpreter, as long as she was told them before she ate. However, she didn’t perceive any ominous omens in that dream or in other dreams about trees.

I think the trees are symbols of life and the fact that he isn’t colliding with the trees is foretelling of his death.
